Voices of 2012: A look at some of our best interviews of the year ...

"I never get up in the morning and look at stock price and say that it's a measure of success. There was a long time when the stock was at $3 and that was never a measure of failure, either. When I get up in the morning, the number 1 thing I care about is whether we are creating products that, in the hands of surgeons, are creating better value for patients. At Intuitive, we try to look at that with cold, hard facts." -- Novation CEO Jody Hatcher

Divorce Causes: 5 Ways To Destroy Your Marriage - Huffington Post

By Francesca Escoto for YourTango.com

A good friend of mine says that love is blind, but marriage restores your 20/20 vision. Regardless of romance, all marriages -- at some point or another -- will go through at least one major crisis.

If the relationship survives past the first few years, after the endorphins have subsided, couples will have to deal with the 12-to-20 season: the time between years 12 and 20 when couples typically work out the last major kinks and differences. If they are unable to reach this point, years 12-20 will typically result in divorce.

Here are five signs you might be the reason why your marriage has not worked out its kinks:

1. You can't handle the in-laws. Research shows that how spouses relate to the in-laws is a strong predictor of marriage longevity. A man who gets along with his wife's parents is wise -- his chances of a strong marriage increases by about 20 percent. Women who get along with their in-laws actually have an increased probability of divorce, by about 20 percent.

If you are the husband who does not invest in knowing or liking the in-laws, or if you are a wife who can't say no to the mom-in-law's constant, last-minute demands, you are probably driving your spouse to divorce.

2. You are always the victim. You never do anything wrong, and your spouse is always doing things on purpose, obviously. He/she is completely insensitive, never takes you into consideration and probably even forgets that you exist. In return, you never ask for anything, you allow your spouse to over-indulge and underestimate.

Perhaps your spouse has been unfaithful but you will forgive every single time. If you truly cannot see any of your own faults or imperfections and blame the other person for all that goes wrong, you are probably driving your spouse to divorce.

3. You can't handle pain or anger. No, this does not mean that you explode in anger every two minutes. This could very well mean you pretend to never get angry in an effort to avoid confrontations. You cannot be fully honest about how you feel because you don't want to be the bearer of bad news.

The idea of pain is overwhelming, and it is something you avoid because it is "bad." You always wait until you cool off, which takes about six months and by then you don't even remember what happened. It must not have been that important...

The idea of anger makes you angry at yourself for even thinking it, because you believe you should never feel angry. When your spouse gets angry, you feel a lot of pain and you work hard to get rid of the pain. Instead of dealing with your hyper-sensitivities, you pretend to not be angry, give silent treatments and fake orgasms, or better yet, you fake headaches to avoid sex altogether. If you are more concerned with keeping the peace than you are with making peace, you are probably driving your spouse to divorce.

4. You know you're right. Negotiating typically means that your spouse will think it over until they agree with, well -- you. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to reason with someone who already knows how the problem will be resolved. Its not that you are being unreasonable, you actually make a lot of sense, which makes everything more difficult.

Since you make sense, you assume that you are right, and that your point of view is therefore the only "right" one. Your spouse never gets it. Ever. Or hardly ever. Because you really are willing to negotiate, just not this time because this time you are right. As usual. If your spouse can't make decisions without you having a great "suggestion," as you typically do, you are probably driving your spouse to divorce.

5. You constantly belittle your partner's needs. Men need words of affirmation and sexual intimacy. Women need time to be heard and appreciated, as well as random acts of kindness. Minimizing how important these are is like denying water to a rose garden and expecting roses.

The bond that holds couples together will never bloom unless you give it what it needs: validation. When couples start to hold their needs against each other, they vanish any possibility of real intimacy. After all, your spouse should be the one person on this planet who wants your needs to be met, even if they can't meet all of them.

If you withold sex as punishment because you know how important it is for him, or you skip intellectual foreplay consistently because you are too tired to romance her, you are probably driving your spouse to divorce.

Excluded by the parliamentary Finance Committee, Majida al-Tamimi, the lifting of the zeroes from the currency in 2013, noting that ?the earth is ripe for replacement.?

Tamimi said in a statement told all of Iraq [where], ?The process of lifting the zeros from the currency in 2013 depends on the nature of the policy of the new central bank governor,? adding that ?according to the previous vision of the bank is supposed to be raised.?

She pointed out that for its ?not arrive until the day the book from the central bank about the process of lifting the zeros or postponed?, drawing attention to the ?ground is prepared for the process of lifting the zeros from the currency, especially if there is fear from entering the currency forged and replace currency original thus happens inflation allowance reduce trading. ?

The Cabinet had in its meeting held on April 10 last patient in the application process of deletion of zeros from the national currency until further notice.

The Central Bank of Iraq, and on the lips of bank adviser appearance of Mohammed Saleh, has confirmed to [where] the need for Iraq to process administrative reform of the currency cash, and that the project to delete the zeros is a step comes as part of the country?s need to process administrative reform of the currency, in order to reduce the cost of cash transactions in the economic process, in addition to the need to provide small denominations coins used in daily circulation of small transactions.

The officials at the central bank, as well as some politicians and economists, urged the government to delete the zeros from the currency, and the issuance of a new currency denominations large cash, in addition to a small Coins.

Observers say the government really intends to delete the zeros from the currency as a step towards improving the purchasing power of the Iraqi dinar, but economists played down the importance of this step, considering that the cost of raising the zeros will be greater than the benefit expected from the lifting of zeros.

GlaxoSmithKline to pay $3B for health fraud

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline will pay $3 billion in fines ? the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history ? for criminal and civil violations involving 10 drugs that are taken by millions of people.

The Justice Department said Monday that GlaxoSmithKline PLC will plead guilty to promoting popular antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin for unapproved uses. The company also will plead guilty to failing to report to the government for seven years some safety problems with diabetes drug Avandia, which was restricted in the U.S. and banned in Europe after it was found in 2007 to sharply increase the risks of heart attacks and congestive heart failure.

In addition to the fine, Glaxo agreed to resolve civil liability for promoting Paxil, Wellbutrin, asthma drug Advair and two lesser-known drugs for unapproved uses. The company also resolved accusations that it overcharged the government-funded Medicaid program for some drugs, and that it paid kickbacks to doctors to prescribe several drugs including Flovent for asthma and Valtrex for genital herpes.

Sir Andrew Witty, Glaxo's CEO, expressed regret Monday and said the company has learned "from the mistakes that were made."

This is the latest in a string of settlements related to drug companies putting profits ahead of patients. In recent years, the government has cracked down on drugmakers' tactics, which include marketing medicines for unapproved uses. While doctors are allowed to prescribe medicines for any use, drugmakers cannot promote them in any way that is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"Let me be clear, we will not tolerate health care fraud," Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole said Monday during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington.

Glaxo is scheduled to plead guilty to the criminal charges and have the settlement approved at a hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boston. In addition to the $3 billion penalty ? which includes a $1 billion criminal fine and forfeiture and $2 billion to resolve civil claims ? Glaxo agreed to be monitored by the government for five years to ensure that it complies with marketing and other rules.

The case against Glaxo was originally brought in January 2003 by two whistleblowers, former Glaxo sales representatives Greg Thorpe and Blair Hamrick. In January 2011, the federal government joined in the case.

Prosecutors said Glaxo illegally promoted Paxil for treating depression in children from 1998 to 2003, even though it wasn't approved for anyone under age 18. The company also promoted Wellbutrin from 1999 through 2003 for weight loss, sexual dysfunction, substance addictions and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, although it was only approved for treatment of major depression.

Starting in 2001, Thorpe reported to his district manager, then to Glaxo's human resources department and finally to Glaxo's chief of global compliance about a number of improper marketing practices. The compliance chief began an internal investigation, which confirmed Thorpe's allegations through various ways including marketing materials and interviews with Hamrick and other sales representatives, according to lawyers for the two men.

Brian Kenney and Tavy Deming, attorneys for the two salesmen, said top management did nothing to stop the illegal practices, pressured Thorpe to resign and later fired Hamrick for allegedly not cooperating with the company's investigation of one kickback allegation.

According to Deming, Hamrick reported that at a 2000 regional meeting of sales representatives in Las Vegas, they were directed to promote Wellbutrin as the drug that makes patients happy, skinny and sexually turned on, part of a catchy national slogan repeated to doctors.

Thorpe said in a statement Monday that he was penalized after he reported kickbacks being paid to doctors and sales reps encouraging doctors to promote drugs for unapproved uses, including using Paxil and Wellbutrin in children.

"In the end, I was told that my concerns were not valid. I was put on leave" after a 24-year career, Thorpe said. He added that he was told to either "take a severance package or go back to work for the same people, doing the same things I had reported to management."

Thorpe and Hamrick ? and two other sales rep whistleblowers who joined the case shortly after them ? will receive an as-yet undecided portion of the $3 billion settlement.

The Glaxo case underscores how aggressive the Justice Department has become in going after similar cases. In a May settlement, Abbott Laboratories pleaded guilty and agreed to pay the government a $700 million criminal fine and forfeiture for promoting Depakote, approved for bipolar disorder and epilepsy, for use in patients with dementia and autism. That was on top of civil settlements with numerous states and the federal government totaling $800 million.

Prior to the Glaxo settlement, the record-setting case involved Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker. It paid the government $2.3 billion in 2009 in criminal and civil fines for improperly marketing 13 different drugs, including erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra and cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the top-selling drug in the world for years. Pfizer was accused of encouraging doctors to prescribe its drugs with free golf, massages and junkets to posh resorts.

"For far too long, we have heard that the pharmaceutical industry views these settlements merely as the cost of doing business," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Stuart F. Delery, head of Justice's civil division. "Today's resolution seeks not only to punish wrongdoing and recover taxpayer dollars, but to ensure GSK's future compliance with the law."

(AP) ? Dara Torres is headed back to Florida to watch the Olympics on TV, like a lot of middle-aged folks.

The 45-year-old mom missed making a record sixth U.S. swim team by nine-hundredths of a second, finishing fourth in the 50-meter freestyle on the last night of the trials Monday.

"This is really over," she said, smiling. "That's it, I'm going to enjoy some time with my daughter, have a nice summer and cheer on the U.S. team from afar."

Torres carried 6-year-old Tessa, her blond head buried in her mother's shoulder, as she came off the pool deck and made her way past reporters for the last time.

"She's bummed she's not going to London now," Torres said. "I told her I'd still take her though."

Torres will have extra time now to help her daughter get ready for first grade in the fall. Always a fitness fanatic, she'll still work out, just not at the highest level required of an elite athlete. And Torres admits it'll be nice to stop worrying about whether she can recover enough to swim three races in quick succession.

"Mentally it's been so tough the past couple years with having more bad workouts than good workouts and going to meets and not being able to go faster at night than I did in the morning," she said.

"I'm used to winning, but that wasn't the goal here. The goal was to try to make it. I didn't quite do it, but I'm really happy with how I did."

Asked if she was immediately going to sign her retirement papers that would end drug testing, Torres joked, "Oh, I'm calling USADA tonight."

After winning three silver medals at the Beijing Olympics, Torres underwent radical knee surgery and put all her hopes into a chaotic dash from one end of the pool to the other. But 25-year-old Jessica Hardy won in 24.50 seconds, while 26-year-old Kara Lynn Joyce took the other Olympic spot in 24.73.

"I don't think there's anything I could have changed," Torres said. "You got to look at it realistically. As much as I want to win and I wanted to make the team, that's pretty good for a 45-year-old."

Hardy said it was an honor to compete against Torres, who retired twice but came back to win five medals at the 2000 Sydney Games, then three more silvers in Beijing.

"I love racing Dara," Hardy said. "I wish she could have made it this year, but swimming with her the past couple years has been really an awesome treat for sure."

Torres finally ends a career that began at her hometown Los Angeles Games in 1984. She won 12 Olympic medals, tied with Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female swimmer. Torres became the first American to swim in five Olympics and the oldest female swimmer ever at the games.

"This time around is going to be the most special to me," she said. "The crowd was so wonderful and I've had so much great support."

Before she stepped on the blocks, Torres remembered her late coach, Michael Lohberg, who died in 2011 from a rare blood disorder that was diagnosed just before she swam in Beijing.

"I was very emotional before my swim," she said. "When I was putting my suit on with my trainer, Anne Tierney, we started crying because I started thinking about Michael. In July of 2010, he had said to me, 'Let's go for this.' I really wanted to finish the story that I started with him. I didn't make it but I know he would have been proud."

Torres was among the big names missing the team.

Katie Hoff, who won three medals in Beijing, failed to qualify. So did four-time Olympian Amanda Beard, Ed Moses, Garrett Weber-Gale and 40-year-old Janet Evans, who came back from a 15-year retirement. Natalie Coughlin, an 11-time medalist, didn't make any of her individual events and will have to settle for a relay spot.

The eight-day trials came to a close with the grueling 1,500 freestyle. Andrew Gemmell won in 14 minutes, 52.19 seconds, powering to the wall just ahead of Connor Jaeger, who took the second spot for London in 14:52.51.

Gemmell tried to make the team in open water, but finished third in those trials. He switched to the pool and made his first Olympics.

"I just wanted to treat it like open water, and I knew I had to swim my own race," he said. "I knew people would be going out faster than me, and I would have to race coming home."

Short stretches of piRNA evaluate cells' genetic history

Monday, July 2, 2012

As scientists have added to a growing list of types of RNA molecules with roles that go beyond conveying the genetic code, they have found the short strands known as Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) particularly perplexing. New work from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) scientists suggests those abundant molecules may be part of the cell's search engine, capable of querying the entire history of a cell's genetic past.

Organisms contain thousands of piRNA molecules, strands of 26 to 31 nucleotides encoded all over the genome. In two studies published online June 25, 2012, in the journal Cell,HHMI investigator Craig Mello of the University of Massachusetts Medical School has discovered that piRNAs may be responsible for detecting foreign RNA?such as that carried by viruses -- relying on a complex search mechanism to reveal whether an invader is foreign based on prior gene activity.

"piRNAs are found in all animals and some of their functions in some organisms have been explained," says Mello. "But overall they've been a very mysterious category of molecule."

Some piRNAs have sequences that match up identically to genes elsewhere in the genome, suggesting that they bind and regulate those genes. But most have no perfect genetic match. Mello and his team focused their attention on the more puzzling piRNAs -- those that had no obvious targets.

In the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, the scientists unexpectedly found that foreign genes that they inserted into the genome were sometimes silenced and sometimes not. When they genetically modified the worm to lack the Piwi protein, the silencing no longer worked.

When the researchers probed which sequences piRNAs tended to shut down, they found that if a cell has ever turned on a gene in the past, the piRNA system will recognize it as a "self" gene and allow it to be expressed. But if it hasn't been active in the organism before, the piRNA will set the silencing mechanism into action so it remains off.

The silencing or lack of silencing is permanent, they found. If the piRNA doesn't silence a gene the first time it encounters it, it won't ever silence it. And if it silences it once, then every time that gene appears in the future, the system will turn it off.

"This is really remarkable," says Mello. "It implies that an organism has a memory of all the previous gene sequences it's ever expressed before."

The researchers think that the snippets of piRNA do not hold the memory in their sequences. Rather, two other small RNA pathways are thought to provide epigenetic memories of "self" and "non-self" RNA. Mello says piRNAs likely allow mismatched pairing as they scan, so that virtually they can potentially recognize all sequences that have been expressed. Silencing occurs only when a sequence has not been seen before.

While people have hypothesized that foreign RNA is recognized by cells as foreign based on a particular feature of the molecule?like a structural element or chemical tag?the new results suggest that the recognition may be sequence based.

That's not all Mello's lab discovered about piRNAs. Not only did the gene silencing pattern that they establish persist throughout an organism's life, but the memory was passed very stably between generations.

"These small RNAs are present in the germline at all stages and are transmitted to both the egg and the sperm," says Mello.

When genetically identical animals exhibit opposite and heritable phenotypes, the mechanism of inheritance is dubbed epigenetic. In this case, the inducers of epigenetic silencing are piRNAs, so with that in mind, Mello coined the term RNAe, for RNA-induced epigenetic silencing.

A last highlight of the team's findings was that although an organism retains its pattern of piRNA silencing throughout its lifetime, each individual establishes its own pattern. While one may silence a gene everytime it encounters it, another may allow its expression.

"It's interesting that the animal is a little bit lenient," says Mello. "Maybe we don't necessarily want to shut off everything that we haven't seen before. Maybe there is some adaptive value to this type of variation."

More questions than answers remain about RNAe: What are all its targets? How exactly is the memory of past gene expression stored? And does the system react to changes in the environment, allowing more or fewer silenced genes to express in times of stress?

"So far, these small RNA systems are turning out to be really remarkable," says Mello. "But there's lots more to nail down."

There Is No Need To Stress Over A Commercial Property ? Yapperz ...

Investing in commercial real estate is a great way to earn significant profits. However, it is not for everyone, because of the large stakes and investments involved.

real estate private placement

Size does matter when it comes to buying a new building for your business. Look into properties that will allow your business to grow, otherwise you will be purchasing a new space in a couple of years.

Before you make a decision on which real estate broker to use, see how they negotiate. Find out about their experience and training. You also want to know they are ethical in their approach to finding the best deals. Ask for a portfolio, featuring both sales that were closed and sales that fell through.

Inspectors should always have credentials available for viewing, should you require their services in your real estate dealings. Always check the credentials of workers in insect and pest control as many of them aren't licensed. This can help you avoid headaches after the sale.

You can send out a newsletter about commercial real estate, or regularly post new content on a social networking website. Once you have locked up a deal, make sure to keep your online presence.

Use your blog to establish an expert reputation. Doing so may open up opportunities for you to sell your available properties or arrange for new deals.

Have a list of goals on hand before you start searching for commercial real estate properties. Write down the features of a piece of property that are the most essential to you, such as how many square feet it must be and the number of specific rooms it should have, including conference rooms, offices, and restrooms.

If there is more then one property you are considering, acquire the house survey checklist for each one during your site tour. Do not proceed past initial proposal responses, unless you inform the property owners. You may want to offhandedly let the owners know that theirs is only one of a few properties in which you are currently interested. It could even get you a good deal.

Size is an extremely important variable when searching for the perfect commercial property. Try to invest into a commercial property which has room to grow to avoid shopping in just a few years again.

When searching for a real estate agent, keep their disclosures in mind so you know who they are working for. Remember that a dual agency could occur. Dual agency is when a real estate agency is responsible for the representation of both parties involved in a transaction. In simpler terms, both the landlord and the tenant are simultaneously represented by the agency. Dual agency must be disclosed by both parties and they need to agree to it.

Always rent out all the available space in your commercial rental properties. If you have any open spaces, then you are losing money. If you're struggling to keep your properties rented, you should consider why that is, and try and fix anything that might be scaring away prospective tenants.

Prior to selling commercial property, have it inspected first by a professional. You can fix any problems right away so you have the best available property.

By now you should have a better understanding of how commercial real estate works. Be flexible and smart when you are trying to get into the real estate market. This way, you will be able to see opportunities that other people don't.

How Estate Planning Is Like Baking | Cooper, Adel & Associates

?

Issue One of the Domestic Estate Planning Series by Melissa Reynard

?

Ok, so some of you may be wondering how on earth frosting a bunch of cupcakes is anything at all like Estate Planning.? And some of you would be right, there are some differences, but there are a lot of similarities as well.

?

Estate Planning, like Baking, involves multiple ingredients, no person?s ?recipe? is the same, and it?s often wise to refer to your cookbook?..er??I mean Elder Law Specialist when attempting anything complicated or for that matter easy.? After all, have you ever put that wonderful looking cake batter in the oven, only to have it fall as soon as it comes out?? Do you lament the wide cracks that appear in your bread? ? These issues are small when faced with the perils of not planning your estate and throwing ?ingredients? every which way, hoping for the best.

?

So let?s talk about ingredients.? When most people think of estate planning, they think of a will, maybe a trust, and not a whole lot else.? Sure, there are wills, and trusts, but you should also plan for other things, like Healthcare decisions and Powers of Attorney.? ? How could a catastrophic illness like a stroke play into your plan?? Your bank accounts, IRA?s, Insurance, and other policies likewise all have a place in your estate planning. ?

?

Each person is going to need different things from their estate planning as well.? There is no one size fits all to these types of things.? Some may have property and farmland they want to consider while other people live in an apartment but have invested heavily their whole lives.? Incomes are different, assets are different;? and as you well know, that recipe for the brownies you got at that party, tastes nothing like your last batch of brownies you made from another recipe.

?

So who?s to help you with your estate planning?? An Elder Law Specialist.? Just like a baker has their trusty cookbook, an Elder Law Specialist specializes in just that, estate planning!? They can help you develop a will or trust, advise on important documents, and give ideas for your financial accounts.? The offices of Cooper, Adel and Associates offer seminars to give you a better idea on what we can do for you, and while it may not be as fun as a cooking class, it?s definitely just as informative.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time sneaking its way onto your PS Vita ...

Nearly a year after it?s announcement at E3 2011, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time has been all the rage for stauch PlayStation supporters across the world. Thieves in Time struck many fans by surprise during Sony?s press conference, and til this day, it continues to amaze fans of the beloved Racoon.

Though, fans should be a little more excited, more specifically Vita owners. Sanzaru Games has announced that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will not only be releasing on Sony?s PlayStation 3, but on the PlayStation Vita as well.?The announcement came to us in trailer form, because nothing confirms things better than a video. Check it out below and tell us what you think.

The game will take full advantage of the PlayStation Vita?s capabilities and functionalities, including six-axis controls, the dual analog sticks, and cross platform saves that will allow players to play Thieves in Time on the PlayStation 3, and transfer their data for on-the-go gaming onto their Vita (and vice versa). Which begs the question: Will buying one copy of the game grant us access to the other? Or will we have to purchase them separately?

Hopefully I?ll only have to make one purchase, and not two. Because personally, I?m excited to have this on the Vita. If Sony continues to pump console-esque games like this, my PlayStation Vita will remain alive and well.

Police move against new protest in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian police arrested about 20 protesters on Wednesday night at a central Moscow square where demonstrators had moved after police uprooted them from a camp, the latest move in a broadening crackdown on the forces opposing President Vladimir Putin.

The detentions at Kudrinskaya Square come as the opposition tries to maintain momentum following a series of massive protests over the winter.

Several hundred demonstrators had gathered at the square outside one of the city's iconic Stalinist Gothic skyscrapers after an early morning police raid on activists who had set up a camp in a park in the center of Chistoprudny Boulevard.

Video from the square streamed by Ekho Moskvy radio's website Wednesday night showed police forcing demonstrators into buses while other protesters yelled angrily. Hundreds of demonstrators remained on the square after the arrests

Police said about 20 people were detained. The state news agency RIA Novosti cited police as saying the detentions began when police were investigating food deliveries to the demonstrators and their attempt to set up a field kitchen. News reports also said prominent opposition figure Ilya Yashin was among those detained.

As they try to intimidate Putin's opponents, authorities have put leading protest organizers behind bars, threatened others with reprisals and proposed legislation introducing a 300-fold increase in the fine for taking part in unsanctioned rallies.

Some opposition leaders hope that the tough measures will foment anger and fuel bigger rallies. But others fear the repression will blunt the protest movement by scaring away many of the mostly middle-class protesters who turned out in the tens of thousands for peaceful demonstrations this winter.

A demonstration of at least 20,000 a day before Putin's May 7 inauguration turned into a fierce battle with police as some of the protest participants tried to march on the Kremlin. Scores were injured in clashes between stone- and bottle-throwing demonstrators and police who fought back with truncheons and tear gas. In the next few days police chased the opposition around city, rounding up hundreds on the streets and in cafes.

Then the crackdown eased, allowing the opposition to stage a camp on tree-lined Chistoprudny Boulevard, one of the most iconic and attractive places in central Moscow.

The organizers refrained from putting out political posters and chanting slogans so that the round-the-clock camp technically wouldn't count as an unsanctioned protest. The gathering daily attracted up to a few thousand during daytime, but attendance would drop to just a few dozen overnight.

The authorities let the camp go for a week, but lost patience after a court on Tuesday supported a lawsuit by local residents who claimed that the vigil was creating a mess. Police dispersed the camp early Wednesday and activists moved to Kudrinskaya Square, which fronts on the Garden Ring, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

Over the weekend, authorities also let a group of popular writers lead several thousand on a march across downtown Moscow unimpeded, and several top painters and other members of the capital's arts scene plan to stage a similar demonstration this week.

While authorities seem to show at least some tolerance to opposition action if the organizers fastidiously obey the law, they clearly aim to scare those in the opposition movement who appear eager to cross the barriers.

Popular blogger and anti-corruption lawyer Alexei Navalny and Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov, the two leading organizers of the winter wave of protests, were sentenced to 15 days in jail for disobeying police following the May 6 rally that ended in clashes. Some Russian media reports speculated that they could face a longer prison term if accused of staging the violence.

The lawmakers who played a key role in protests, Ilya Ponomarev, Gennady Gudkov and Dmitry Gudkov, all members of the socialist Just Russia faction, have faced increasing pressure from the Kremlin party dominating the parliament.

On Tuesday, several members of the Kremlin party called for stripping the three of the immunity from prosecution they enjoyed as members of parliament.

"Go ahead, arrest deputies, put us behind bars, that will only speed up your demise," Gennady Gudkov, a KGB veteran turned fierce Putin critic, said during debates in the lower house. "Instead of political reforms, they want to only rely on force, but violence foments violence."

His son, Dmitry, tweeted Wednesday that the Kremlin party apparently is preparing to initiate a bill that would introduce a five-year prison term for organizers of the rallies that end in violence.

As part of the official pressure on the Gudkovs, a private security agency they own was targeted by authorities, who found some violations and ordered it stripped it of its arms.

In another move to tame the opposition, Putin's loyalists are also working on legislation that would raise the level of fines from the current maximum 5,000 rubles ($166) to 1,500,000 rubles ($50,000).

The rising official pressure comes as the opposition is desperately trying to maintain momentum amid the feelings of gloom that followed Putin's inauguration.

Some activists believe massive rallies are essential for shaking Putin's power, but others argue that the opposition must focus instead on grassroots activism and municipal elections, hoping they would help gradually make Russia a more open and pluralistic society.

Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the liberal Yabloko party, has warned the protest leaders against provoking police.

"If the organizers believe that the riot police cruelty will multiply the number of people eager to fight them, it's a wrong calculation," he wrote on his blog. "People will simply stop attending rallies and marches if blood is shed there, if they are beaten."

Trashing old, unused medications best for reducing environmental impact

Trashing old, unused medications best for reducing environmental impact [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 16-May-2012

A new study suggests that dumping old or unneeded medications in the trash can may be the best way to reduce the environmental impact of the 200 million pounds of pharmaceuticals that go unused in the U.S. each year. The report, which weighs the emissions from flushing, incinerating or trashing drugs, appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Stephen J. Skerlos and colleagues explain that to avoid the risks of abuse and accidental poisoning, as well as other problems that unused, unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals pose, they shouldn't be kept in homes. If thrown away or flushed down a toilet, however, antibiotics, hormones and other drugs can get into lakes, rivers and other water supplies, where they can affect humans and animals. Some places in the U.S. have recently started take-back programs, in which pharmacies collect unneeded drugs and incinerate them with other medical waste, but this burning and transportation produces greenhouse gases and other pollution. The authors wanted to assess the different disposal methods to see which might make the most sense for U.S. households.

Their evaluation shows that, on balance, trash disposal may be the best option in the U.S. Flushing unwanted drugs puts more drug compounds into the environment. Incineration of drugs taken back to a pharmacy could significantly reduce releases to the environment, but the authors note that take-back programs often have limited participation and could have major financial costs. A national program could cost $2 billion each year. A national participation rate of 50 percent in a take-back program, considered to be a high level of participation, would reduce releases of drugs by 93 percent, which is only five percent more than 100 percent participation in trash disposal. "Furthermore, since 60 percent of individuals in the U.S. already trash their unused pharmaceuticals, trash disposal is likely to accomplish faster removal of unused pharmaceuticals from households due to higher participation rates and greater convenience," the authors say.

Music Review: Delta Moon - Black Cat Oil - seattlepi.com

Delta Moon is a very popular band around metro Atlanta, which is where I live. Listening to Black Cat Oil will quickly make clear how they have gained such a loyal and growing following.

All of the songs on this CD are originals, except for an excellent cover of Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." The rest of the songs were written by founding member Tom Gray, with assistance from fellow founding member Mark Johnson on "Black Cat Oil," "Wishbone," "Black Coffee," and "Jukin'."

With a solid rhythm section providing a pounding beat and Tom Gray's slightly ragged-sounding vocals, Black Cat Oil has a great rootsy, bluesy rock sound from the very first song, "Down and Dirty." The CD was recorded at Atlanta's Bakos Amp Works studio with a basic drum setup, an upright bass and only three amps, according to the press release. They then used vintage amps and equipment from the '50s and '60s to get that authentic, swampy sound.

Every song on this CD is excellent. "Blues in a Bottle," Tom Gray says, came to him in a dream. In the press release, he explains that he dreamed that a guitarist was trying to decide the best way to play a song called "Blues in a Bottle." He wished he had come up with that title, "Then I awoke and discovered that I had." It's a great blues-rock tune, no matter how he came to write it.

"Walk Out in the River," is a song about sorrow and hope. It contains one of my favorite images: "There's a little girl down by the swimming pool side/Blowing bubbles with angels trapped inside/When the bubbles pop, the angels go free/ And they fly away to heaven cross the galaxy."

The song was inspired by Gray's bout with cancer. He is okay now, but a friend who also had cancer did not make it. He spun that experience into an incredibly moving song.

"Black Cat Oil" is pure Americana, celebrating, as many blues songs before it, the appeal of voodoo and its easy promises. If things don't go right with your Black Cat Oil, you just need to use a little more. "Wishbone" and "Black Coffee" are straight blues songs with some really tasty dual slide guitar work from Johnson and Gray.

My favorite song on the CD is "Neon Jesus," a slow, melodic walk on the wild side of your typical southern city, lighted both physically and emotionally by a neon Jesus on the top of a building. This song resonates with me on so many levels and represents the best qualities of Southern roots music with a contemporary touch.

"Jukin'" lightens the mood with a song in praise of finding those little out-of-the-way clubs and just having a mighty good time. "Sunshine" is a song about maybe not getting what you want, but getting what you need, with a very catchy, hook-filled musical accompaniment.

The last original song on the CD before the great McDowell tune mentioned earlier is "Applejack," which again features some fantastic guitar work and a joyful tribute to applejack and watermelon wine.

Overall, this CD is about hope and the things that get us through and keep us going. While it is Southern to its core, its message is universal and will touch people wherever they are, giving them a very enjoyable listening experience as well.

Pick up Black Cat Oil and get acquainted with Delta Moon. You'll be glad you did.

Despite flesh-eating bacteria, young woman's ... - Health and Fitness

After falling from a homemade zipline and cutting her leg, 24-year-old Aimee Copeland contracted a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection that has claimed one of her legs. NBC?s Gabe Gutierrez reports and TODAY?s Ann Curry talks with her parents, Andy and Donna, about Aimee?s recovery.

The parents of Aimee Copeland, the 24-year-old Georgia woman whose leg was amputated after contracting flesh-eating bacteria, told TODAY Monday they are optimistic about their daughter?s recovery. They have been communicating with her and she has begun to rely less on her respirator.

?We were able communicate with her through lip reading, which we?re becoming quite proficient at at this point.,? her father Andy Copeland told Ann Curry Monday.

Their daughter has a breathing tube down her throat, but is looking forward to being able to eat again, especially her favorite food: ice cream. ??

The flesh-eating infection?that led to the amputation of one of the young Georgia woman?s legs was caused by a bacteria found in warmer freshwater lakes and rivers. Even a wound as minor as a tiny scratch or cut can serve as the starting point of the?bacterial?infection?called necrotizing fasciitis, according to the National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation. On its website, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health says an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 cases occur in the United States each year, resulting in 2,000 to 3,000 deaths.

Aimee?will lose her fingers on both hands but doctors hope to save the palms of her hands, which would make it easier for her to use prosthetics, according to TODAY. She may also lose her right foot. She remains in critical condition in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, hospital spokeswoman Stacey Snyder said.

Dad Andy Copeland, who lives with his wife, Donna, in Spartanburg, S.C., has been sharing her roller-coaster?progress on blog posts and Facebook.

Almost two weeks ago, the University of West Georgia psychology grad student was kayaking with friends in the Little Tallapoosa River when she stopped to try a homemade zip line. She fell from the line and suffered a deep gash to her left leg, which required 22 staples to close.

Over the following days, her pain increased and she was given antibiotics and an MRI. On May 4, a friend carried her to the ER and she was finally was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that breaks down muscle and fat and can lead to organ failure. The bacteria that infected Copeland is a bug called Aeromonas hydrophila.

Copeland reportedly was recently diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease, which might help explain why she became critically ill with an infection most would shrug off, says Dr. Chaim Putterman, chief of rheumatology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. ?It?s not only the bug,? Putterman told TODAY.com, but the interaction between the bug and the host, or patient.

In 2008, he coauthored a report about eight lupus patients hospitalized with necrotizing fasciitis at his hospital. Two of them died. Putterman says both lupus itself and the treatment for it could increase patients? risk of necrotizing fasciitis.

?Many of the medications that we use to treat lupus patients are what we call immunosuppressants,? says Putterman, who is not involved in Copeland?s case. ?Increased infection is one of the known prices we pay for those medications.?

In addition, in autoimmune diseases such as lupus, ?the immune system is out of whack,? Putterman says. So even without taking drugs to suppress their immune systems, people with autoimmune diseases are more susceptible to infections.

?Necrotizing fasciitis didn?t start when she fell in the water. It didn?t start with the stapling. It started later,? he says. ?But in these cases, minutes and hours do make a difference. It?s a rapidly progressing infection, so minutes count.?

The fact that Copeland has survived this long and that, according to her father, her lung function is improving, are both positive signs, Putterman says.

?What definitely is very, very much in her favor is that she?s 24 years-old,? he says. ?Young adults are definitely much more resilient than individuals at the extremes of ages.?

While Aimee?s condition is improving, doctors say she has a long recovery ahead of her.?

?It will be very difficult, in fact, her recovery will continue for the rest of her life,? Dr. Walter Ingram, Grady Memorial Hospital Burn Center, Atlanta, told TODAY.

Meanwhile, the Copelands told TODAY they are staying focused on her recovery, rather than how hurting her leg could have caused the life-threatening infection.

?Our focus is on trying to stay positive, look at the present and the future,? Andy told TODAY. We believe that future is going to be bright for Aimee.?

Critter & Guitari Buck the Trend with Hardware That Works Like a Music App [Video]

We write about music apps because they enable all sorts of amazing things that manufacturers could never do with hardware - or if they could, it would be prohibitively expensive. For example, if you had to buy a special MP3 player to display lyrics, you probably wouldn't do it - and yet that same function turned into software attracted over a million people in April alone. The Rise of Chemophobia In the News

I find much in the popular media to be anti-chemical. Invariably, "Chemical" is used as a perjorative, almost always being prefixed with either toxic or hazardous. Further, it seems that the term "organic" means without "chemicals", which is idiotic, since Every! Single! Thing! is composed of chemicals.

So, anyway, I have a wonderful time with the chemophobes, preferring to use the term "Organic" to refer to a class of covalently-bonded chemicals, primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms, with various other elements occasionally found.

So, most pesticides (with the exception of things like Bordeaux powder) are organic, as artificial sweeteners, etc. Water is never organic, btw.

Oil prices fall to six-month low. Gas to follow.

Oil prices fall below $99 a barrel on weak jobs report. At $3.80 a gallon, gasoline prices should follow oil prices down.?

The?price?of?oil?plunged to its lowest level in nearly six months Friday, falling below $100 per barrel for the first time since February. A drop in gasoline?prices?can't be far behind.

It's a welcome trend for motorists, with the summer driving season just around the corner. And it eases some pressure on the U.S. economy, which has shown only agonizingly slow growth in the nearly three years since the Great Recession ended.

Oil?fell $4.05, or 4 percent, to $98.49, after a weak U.S. jobs report offered the latest evidence that the global economy is weakening, possibly reducing demand for?oil. At the same time, there is mounting evidence that world?oil?supplies are growing.

"The jobs report was the coup de grace," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "But it's hard to see how?prices?could have stayed on the boil given ample supplies and continued economic uncertainty."

For the week,?oil?fell more than $6 and is now about $12 below its February high. U.S. gasoline?prices?have fallen to $3.80 per gallon from a peak of $3.94 in early April.

Now they could go as low as $3.50 per gallon by July 4, according to Tom Kloza, Chief?Oil?Analyst at theOil?Price?Information Service.

Tony Wei, a mechanical engineer from Piscataway, NJ., will welcome lower?prices. He travels 100 miles every day to and from his job in Morris County, N.J. He's also planning a 500-mile trip to Canada and a 400-mile trip to southwest Virginia this summer in his Honda Accord.

"Definitely, I'm going to notice it," he said. "I buy so much gas."

The picture of the?oil?market is the reverse of just a few months ago. Then, world?oil?demand looked to be rising quickly at the same time that world supplies were threatened by a host of small production outages and the potential for drastically reduced production from Iran, the world's third-biggest exporter.

Those developments raised the prospect that world supplies would be at their most tenuous just as the summer driving season arrived in the developed world. The?price?of U.S. benchmark?oil?rose to about $110. The?price?for international?oil?used to make most of the gasoline in the U.S. spiked even higher, to $128 per barrel.

Gasoline?prices?in the U.S. appeared to be on track to soar past $4 per gallon nationwide, another burden for U.S. consumers already suffering from high unemployment and pitiful wage growth.
