Was Jennifer Lawrence Too 'Curvy' To Play Katniss In 'Hunger Games'?

Fan groups respond to one critic's suggestion that Lawrence's 'womanly figure makes a bad fit' for Katniss.

Fans flooded in droves into movie theaters this weekend to see "The Hunger Games." In the wake of the highly anticipated release, much of the criticism surrounding the movie has been not about the young stars' performances, but their appearances.

Most recently there has been criticism of Jennifer Lawrence's weight, with some sighting that as Katniss, a girl who grew up in a famine-stricken district of a dystopian society, she should have been thinner.

New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis wrote, "A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission."

The statement is receiving much backlash, considering Lawrence is now a certified movie star that countless young women look up to. Putting aside the negative body-image issues the comment suggests, one wonders whether Dargis is accurate in her assessment of the actress/character disparity? MTV News asked expert "Hunger Games" fans to weigh in. Most had the same message: They loved what Lawrence brought to her character and that the scrutiny is misguided.

"Katniss may not have been as thin or small in stature as depicted in the book, but it's not unfathomable that her hunting prowess would have allowed her to have some meat on her bones," TheHob.org's Gabby Vittoria responded. She went on to point out that "Peeta wasn't tall in the movie; Clove wasn't big and brawny; Katniss wasn't smaller than most of the Tributes. These physical changes certainly didn't take away from the story and messages in the movie. Besides, for me, Jennifer's acting and the quality of the film makes her weight a non-issue."

Many fans not only disagreed with the film critic but were affronted by these reviews of Lawrence. "I'm offended by this critique on so many levels, and honestly, I was shocked that it was ever an issue and that a professional critic would bring it up in the film's review," Sara Gundell from the Hunger Games Examiner fan site stated.

This backlash about Lawrence's weight comes in the wake of the questioning of Rue's race in the film. The pre-teen is played by Amandla Stenberg, who is African American. In recent days her casting was the subject of racially fueled criticism by a handful of moviegoers who have suffered their own backlash.

Prominent Pakistani acid victim commits suicide

ISLAMABAD?? Pakistani acid attack victim Fakhra Younus had endured more than three dozen surgeries over more than a decade to repair her severely damaged face and body when she finally decided life was no longer worth living.

The 33-year-old former dancing girl ? who was allegedly attacked by her then-husband, an ex-parliamentarian and son of a political powerhouse ? jumped from the sixth floor of a building in Rome, where she had been living and receiving treatment.

Her March 17 suicide and the return of her body to Pakistan on Sunday reignited furor over the case, which received significant international attention at the time of the attack. Her death came less than a month after a Pakistani filmmaker won the country's first Oscar for a documentary about acid attack victims.

Younus' story not only drives home the woeful plight of many women in conservative Muslim Pakistan, it is also a reminder of how the country's rich and powerful operate with impunity. Younus' ex-husband, Bilal Khar, was eventually acquitted, but many believe he used his connections to escape the law's grip ? a common occurrence in Pakistan.

More than 8,500 acid attacks, forced marriages and other forms of violence against women were reported in Pakistan in 2011, according to The Aurat Foundation, a women's rights organization. Because the group relied mostly on media reports, the figure is likely an undercount.

"The saddest part is that she realized that the system in Pakistan was never going to provide her with relief or remedy," Nayyar Shabana Kiyani, an activist at The Aurat Foundation, said of Younus. "She was totally disappointed that there was no justice available to her."

Younus was a teenage dancing girl working in the red light district of the southern city of Karachi when she met her future husband, the son of Ghulam Mustafa Khar, a former governor of Pakistan's largest province, Punjab. The unusual pairing was the younger Khar's third marriage. He was in his mid-30s at the time.

The couple was married for three years, but Younus eventually left him because he allegedly physically and verbally abused her. She claimed that he came to her mother's house while she was sleeping in May 2000 and poured acid all over her in the presence of her 5-year-old son from a different man.

Tehmina Durrani, Ghulam Mustafa Khar's ex-wife and his son's stepmother, became an advocate for Younus after the attack, drawing international attention to the case. She said that Younus' injuries were the worst she had ever seen on an acid attack victim.

"So many times we thought she would die in the night because her nose was melted and she couldn't breathe," said Durrani, who wrote a book about her own allegedly abusive relationship with the elder Khar. "We used to put a straw in the little bit of her mouth that was left because the rest was all melted together."

She said Younus, whose life had always been hard, became a liability to her family, for whom she was once a source of income.

"Her life was a parched stretch of hard rock on which nothing bloomed," Durrani wrote in a column in The News after Younus' suicide.

Younus' ex-husband grew up in starkly different circumstances, amid the wealth and power of the country's feudal elite, and counts Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar as a cousin.

Bilal Khar once again denied carrying out the acid attack in a TV interview following her suicide, suggesting a different man with the same name committed the crime. He claimed Younus killed herself because she didn't have enough money, not because of her horrific injuries, and criticized the media for hounding him about the issue.

"You people should be a little considerate," said Khar. "I have three daughters and when they go to school people tease them."

Younus was energized when the Pakistani government enacted a new set of laws last year that explicitly criminalized acid attacks and mandated that convicted attackers would serve a minimum sentence of 14 years, said Durrani. She hoped to return someday to get justice once her health stabilized.

"She said, 'When I come back, I will reopen the case, and I'll fight myself,' and she was a fighter," Durrani said.

Durrani had to battle with both Younus' ex-husband and the government to send her to Italy, where the Italian government paid for her treatment and provided her money to live on and send her child to school. Pakistani officials argued that sending Younus to Italy would give the country a bad name, Durrani said.

Younus was happy when Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won an Oscar for her documentary about acid attack victims in February, but was worried about being forgotten since she wasn't profiled in the film, said Durrani.

Durrani said Younus' case should be a reminder that the Pakistani government needs to do much more to prevent acid attacks and other forms of violence against women, and also help the victims.

"I think this whole country should be extremely embarrassed that a foreign country took responsibility for a Pakistani citizen for 13 years because we could give her nothing, not justice, not security," said Durrani.

It can be difficult to uncover the behavior of small, shy, nocturnal primates like the brown mouse lemur (Microcebus rufus), especially in the dense rainforests of Madagascar where this lemur lives. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Ecology shows that the social interactions of brown mouse lemurs can be monitored by mapping the transfer of tagged lice.

Brown mouse lemurs are the only known host of the parasitic louse Lemurpediculus verruculosus. The lice have evolved to stay attached to the sparse hair on the lemurs' ears, where they feed on the lemur's blood, and can only survive for a few hours if separated from their host. Most transfer of lice between hosts is therefore by direct contact. Sarah Zohdy from the University of Helsinki tagged individual lice from trapped lemurs using colored nail varnish to see if they were transmitted during social interactions between hosts in the wild.

The team of researchers from Finland, USA, and Madagascar, found that the lice were transferred between 43% of the population all of them males. The lice were found on their ears, testes, and eyelids and the pattern of louse transfer provided new information about the habits of these hard-to-study creatures.

Sarah Zohdy explained, "Male lemurs are known to share nest-holes (and lice) however louse transfer peaked during the breeding season, indicating a greater number of social interactions - probably conflicts over females. There was no overall association between age and louse transfer. The youngest male in the study had the worst louse infestation, but only donated one louse, indicating a low number of interactions, while the eldest male, who also had a heavy infestation, appeared to be more sociable, collecting lice from many donors. Other males appeared to be 'superspreaders' donating but not collecting lice."

The pattern of transferred lice mapped on to animal catch sites also showed that lemurs travel much greater distances and interact over a wider geographic area than previously thought.

In Madagascar the use of tagged lice has provided an extraordinary insight into the life of the brown mouse lemur (and the natural movement of parasites) in their natural habitat. Given the success of parasites throughout the animal kingdom this technique has the potential to find new (if itchy) information about other elusive animals.

Fewer injuries for winning soccer teams

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? All soccer players and fans know that it is better to win than to lose. Yet the fact that victory also means less risk of injury is not as obvious. New findings from researchers in sports medicine at Link?ping University have aroused great interest among Europe's elite soccer teams.

H?kan Bengtsson, a master's student in physiotherapy, has analysed data from 6272 games played by 26 of the top European clubs. The material comprises 2739 injuries and constitutes the world's largest database of its kind. The results was tabled at a regional conference on physiotherapy in Link?ping March 22.

Based on information the clubs sent to the Swedish researchers once a month, H?kan Bengtsson then examined how the injury rate is influenced by three factors:

• the result
• home or away match
• type of competition

It turned out that the outcome of the match had the clearest correlation with the proportion of injuries. For teams that lost, the risk of injury was 21 percent greater than for the winning teams; in drawn games the risk was 15 percent higher.

"We have not established which is the chicken or the egg. The most likely scenario is that a player was injured during the match, which subsequently lead to a loss. The bottom line is that the clubs' medical work is vital to the results," says H?kan Bengtsson.

Bengtsson was somewhat surprised that a higher injury risk ensued for the home team than the away team. One conceivable explanation is that home teams play more aggressively coupled with longer and faster running sorties. With regard to the type of competition, Champions League matches appeared somewhat more dangerous than for the rhythm of the domestic leagues.

Health insurance exchange passes Senate | Politicker NJ

TRENTON ? The Senate released the ?New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act,? bill that would create a statewide health insurance exchange, as called for by the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The bill, S1319/A2171 is sponsored by Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), of Montclair, and Sen. Joseph Vitale, (D-19), of Woodbridge.

It passed 22-13, along party lines.

The exchange would be run by an eight-member board of directors. The commissioners of banking and insurance and human services would serve as nonvoting members.

The governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate, would appoint five of the members. The members on the board would serve on a part-time basis for an annual salary of $50,000.

The board would create a Basic Health Plan, consistent with the provisions of the federal act. The board will also establish the State Business Health Options Program to assist participating employers in facilitating the enrollment of their employees in qualified plans.

Eligible employers would include as of January 2014 employers with at least two but no more than 50 employees; beginning January 2016, those with from 51 to 100 employees, and, beginning January 2017, those with more than 100 employees.

The bill would also establish the New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Trust Fund in the Department of Treasury as a ?non-lapsing revolving fund.?

Sen. Robert Singer, (R-30), Lakewood,?called the bill ?premature,? especially since the federal government is providing extensions to other states on the program. ?The Supreme Court is due to hear arguments later this month on the constitutionality of the law, dubbed Obamacare. It is possible all or portions of the law could be struck down by the court.

Singer called for having people from the Banking and Insurance and Human Services departments work on this issue, as opposed to having appointees serve on a board, each of whom would receive $50,000.

?By paying $50,000, we?re creating another bureaucracy,? he said. ?We are trying to make government smaller.? ?

Fortunately, I?ve been doing a lot of speaking lately.

During the Q&A Session, one question I?m frequently asked is, ?How can I lessen my Fear of Public Speaking and become a better Presenter?

There are a number of answers to this question, and I think a blog post, categorizing them, is appropriate. ?Here it is!

Lessen the Fear of Public Speaking

• Know your material.
• If you don?t have a great knowledge about what you?re presenting, you should?have fear!
• Use Google Alerts to keep updated on the latest information for the subject you?ll be speaking about.
• Structure your presentation properly.
• A delicious cake is the result of a great recipe, that has:?specific?ingredients, in specific amounts, added at specific?times, in a specific manner.
• Professional presentations also follow a ?Recipe.?
• The?Title should draw people in to see and hear you.
• Think of it as the:
• Headline of a newspaper article.
• Subject Line of an email.
• Spine of a book.
• If the above don?t grab attention and interest, people won?t want to know more.
• Write your own Introduction.
• It is not your biography.
• It should answer the questions:
• Why this subject?
• Why this speaker?
• Why now?
• Think of the Introduction as the King?s Trumpeters announcing his arrival! ?It should build the audience?s anticipation for you, the speaker!
• Open your speech with something that Grabs the Attention of the people you?re speaking to.
• Next, Tell them What you?ll be Telling Them, and how you?ll be handling questions.
• The formula for the Body of the presentation is:
• Make a Point ? Tell a Story to support that point.
• Three to five points per presentation.
• Personal stories are best!
• The Conclusion has two parts.

1. Tell the audience what you told them.
2. Have a Strong Closing.

• The last thing the audience sees and hears will be the first thing they will remember.

Arrive early to your event to Meet & Greet?your audience.

• It is amazing how much easier it is to talk to people you?ve met, if even for a moment. ?It is a great anxiety reducer!

Question & Answer Session

• Take questions?before?your Closing.
• State that in your Opening when you give the audience a ?road map? of how you?ll be proceeding.
• The?Closing?is the?Closing?- Period.
• Taking questions throughout a presentation, unless it is a workshop, is extremely hard to do and not wise for a number of reasons.

Practice! ? Practice! ? Practice!

• Practice in front of a mirror.
• Practice out loud.
• Practice with a video recorder and watch?yourself!
• Practice with friends and family as an audience and ask for constructive feedback.
• Malcomb Gladwell, in his best selling book, ?Outliers?, says it takes 10,000 hours to become a Expert.
• He also says,??Practice isn?t the thing you do once you?re good.
  It?s the thing you do that makes you good.?
• Athletic?Coaches tell us, ?We?ll play as we practice.? ?They are correct!

During that decade, he became part owner in a notorious gambling club, and managed to replace his fortune and then some, but he still wants the lands around his family home returned, and he burns to get back at Langford.

Lady Penelope Marbury was engaged to a duke, but her father ended the engagement when it turned out the Duke?s younger sister had got pregnant out of wedlock. The duke married another woman within a week of the dissolution of their engagement, and Penelope is still whispered about in polite society, years later. In order to get her married off, her father increases her dowry , with the land that borders his estate (and just so happens to be the property surrounding Bourne?s family home, which he won from Langford in another card game). Penelope and Michael were childhood friends, along with Langford?s son Thomas. Penelope hasn?t heard from Michael since he lost his fortune, and feels rather conflicted about land that?s rightfully his going towards getting her a husband. As one of five girls, she understands that her father wants her settled, and she feels it?s her fault (and the scandal after her broken engagement) that two of her sisters settled for less than exciting husbands. She wants better for her husbands.

So when Michael shows up at his old estate, and kidnaps Penelope as she?s out walking in the woods, determined to compromise her so they have to marry, and he can get the land in her dowry ? she forces him to agree to pretend theirs is a love match (so there won?t be another scandal), and that he will help her sisters find good husbands that they love. Once Penelope discovers that Thomas, who is still her good friend, will also be hurt and possibly ruined by Michael?s desire for revenge, she sets out to change her husband?s mind.

Having read Maclean?s?Love by Numbers?trilogy last year,?it was nice to see what happened to poor Penelope Marbury (the Duke she was engaged to is the hero of the third book in the trilogy).?Penelope is a great character, and what makes this book really work. Michael is angsty and conflicted and frankly quite douchy towards his awesome wife throughout much of the book, but unlike several other reviewers out there on the internets, I didn?t think he crossed the line into too unforgivably unlikable. Because Maclean shows us both sides of the relationship, we do see Michael?s conflicted feelings about using Penelope, and treating her callously, and it?s clear that some of the conflicts in their relationship could (like in most romances) have been solved if he just explained himself better to her. And he does step up nicely towards the end, and Penelope ends up being the one who saves him in more ways than one. The very end of the book also teases a very interesting relationship between Bourne?s reclusive book keeper business partner, and Penelope?s bluestocking younger sister ? so I can?t wait for the next book in the series.

Cells may spare kidney transplant rejection drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An experimental technique seems to be freeing some kidney transplant patients from having to take anti-rejection drugs.

Researchers transplanted certain cells from the kidney donor's bone marrow along with the new organ. Five of eight transplant recipients who tried the method so far were off immune-suppressing medication up to 2? years later, the researchers reported Wednesday.

The preliminary results were considered important enough to be published in the journal Science Translational Medicine even though the study still is under way, because the technique worked for patients who didn't have well-matched or related donors.

The idea is that if a sort of twin immune system takes root and lasts, it can allow the patient's body to accept the foreign organ and not attack it, said study co-author Dr. Suzanne Ildstad of the University of Lousville. Scientists call it chimerism.

"The most reliable indicator of really being successful at taking someone off immune-suppressing drugs is durable chimerism," says Ildstad, who teamed with doctors at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the research.

Transplant recipients usually must take multiple immune-suppressing pills for life to prevent rejection of their new organ. Those drugs cause lots of side effects, such as raising the risk of cancer and kidney damage.

Other scientists are attempting to tap bone marrow to induce immune tolerance, with varying success.

Ildstad's approach transfuses a special mix of bone marrow cells including blood-producing stem cells and another type named "facilitating cells" that are thought vital for a successful transplant. She filters out still other cells that can become too aggressive and cause a life-threatening disorder named graft-versus-host disease.

Transplant recipients had radiation and chemotherapy, not destroying their own bone marrow but tamping it down to make space for the donated cells, explained study co-author Dr. Joseph Leventhal, a Northwestern transplant surgeon. Five patients who had the dual immunity a year later were weaned off all drugs. Two others whose hybrid immunity faded are faring well using a low dose of one anti-rejection drug. One patient needed a repeat transplant after an infection and didn't get to try weaning.

Much more study is needed to find the best approach but "the results are striking," Dr. Tatsuo Kawai of Massachusetts General Hospital wrote in an accompanying editorial. He is part of a team that in 2008 reported the only other success with a small number of mismatched transplants.
