How Estate Planning Is Like Baking | Cooper, Adel & Associates

?

Issue One of the Domestic Estate Planning Series by Melissa Reynard

?

Ok, so some of you may be wondering how on earth frosting a bunch of cupcakes is anything at all like Estate Planning.? And some of you would be right, there are some differences, but there are a lot of similarities as well.

?

Estate Planning, like Baking, involves multiple ingredients, no person?s ?recipe? is the same, and it?s often wise to refer to your cookbook?..er??I mean Elder Law Specialist when attempting anything complicated or for that matter easy.? After all, have you ever put that wonderful looking cake batter in the oven, only to have it fall as soon as it comes out?? Do you lament the wide cracks that appear in your bread? ? These issues are small when faced with the perils of not planning your estate and throwing ?ingredients? every which way, hoping for the best.

?

So let?s talk about ingredients.? When most people think of estate planning, they think of a will, maybe a trust, and not a whole lot else.? Sure, there are wills, and trusts, but you should also plan for other things, like Healthcare decisions and Powers of Attorney.? ? How could a catastrophic illness like a stroke play into your plan?? Your bank accounts, IRA?s, Insurance, and other policies likewise all have a place in your estate planning. ?

?

Each person is going to need different things from their estate planning as well.? There is no one size fits all to these types of things.? Some may have property and farmland they want to consider while other people live in an apartment but have invested heavily their whole lives.? Incomes are different, assets are different;? and as you well know, that recipe for the brownies you got at that party, tastes nothing like your last batch of brownies you made from another recipe.

?

So who?s to help you with your estate planning?? An Elder Law Specialist.? Just like a baker has their trusty cookbook, an Elder Law Specialist specializes in just that, estate planning!? They can help you develop a will or trust, advise on important documents, and give ideas for your financial accounts.? The offices of Cooper, Adel and Associates offer seminars to give you a better idea on what we can do for you, and while it may not be as fun as a cooking class, it?s definitely just as informative.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time sneaking its way onto your PS Vita ...

Nearly a year after it?s announcement at E3 2011, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time has been all the rage for stauch PlayStation supporters across the world. Thieves in Time struck many fans by surprise during Sony?s press conference, and til this day, it continues to amaze fans of the beloved Racoon.

Though, fans should be a little more excited, more specifically Vita owners. Sanzaru Games has announced that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will not only be releasing on Sony?s PlayStation 3, but on the PlayStation Vita as well.?The announcement came to us in trailer form, because nothing confirms things better than a video. Check it out below and tell us what you think.

The game will take full advantage of the PlayStation Vita?s capabilities and functionalities, including six-axis controls, the dual analog sticks, and cross platform saves that will allow players to play Thieves in Time on the PlayStation 3, and transfer their data for on-the-go gaming onto their Vita (and vice versa). Which begs the question: Will buying one copy of the game grant us access to the other? Or will we have to purchase them separately?

Hopefully I?ll only have to make one purchase, and not two. Because personally, I?m excited to have this on the Vita. If Sony continues to pump console-esque games like this, my PlayStation Vita will remain alive and well.

Police move against new protest in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian police arrested about 20 protesters on Wednesday night at a central Moscow square where demonstrators had moved after police uprooted them from a camp, the latest move in a broadening crackdown on the forces opposing President Vladimir Putin.

The detentions at Kudrinskaya Square come as the opposition tries to maintain momentum following a series of massive protests over the winter.

Several hundred demonstrators had gathered at the square outside one of the city's iconic Stalinist Gothic skyscrapers after an early morning police raid on activists who had set up a camp in a park in the center of Chistoprudny Boulevard.

Video from the square streamed by Ekho Moskvy radio's website Wednesday night showed police forcing demonstrators into buses while other protesters yelled angrily. Hundreds of demonstrators remained on the square after the arrests

Police said about 20 people were detained. The state news agency RIA Novosti cited police as saying the detentions began when police were investigating food deliveries to the demonstrators and their attempt to set up a field kitchen. News reports also said prominent opposition figure Ilya Yashin was among those detained.

As they try to intimidate Putin's opponents, authorities have put leading protest organizers behind bars, threatened others with reprisals and proposed legislation introducing a 300-fold increase in the fine for taking part in unsanctioned rallies.

Some opposition leaders hope that the tough measures will foment anger and fuel bigger rallies. But others fear the repression will blunt the protest movement by scaring away many of the mostly middle-class protesters who turned out in the tens of thousands for peaceful demonstrations this winter.

A demonstration of at least 20,000 a day before Putin's May 7 inauguration turned into a fierce battle with police as some of the protest participants tried to march on the Kremlin. Scores were injured in clashes between stone- and bottle-throwing demonstrators and police who fought back with truncheons and tear gas. In the next few days police chased the opposition around city, rounding up hundreds on the streets and in cafes.

Then the crackdown eased, allowing the opposition to stage a camp on tree-lined Chistoprudny Boulevard, one of the most iconic and attractive places in central Moscow.

The organizers refrained from putting out political posters and chanting slogans so that the round-the-clock camp technically wouldn't count as an unsanctioned protest. The gathering daily attracted up to a few thousand during daytime, but attendance would drop to just a few dozen overnight.

The authorities let the camp go for a week, but lost patience after a court on Tuesday supported a lawsuit by local residents who claimed that the vigil was creating a mess. Police dispersed the camp early Wednesday and activists moved to Kudrinskaya Square, which fronts on the Garden Ring, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

Over the weekend, authorities also let a group of popular writers lead several thousand on a march across downtown Moscow unimpeded, and several top painters and other members of the capital's arts scene plan to stage a similar demonstration this week.

While authorities seem to show at least some tolerance to opposition action if the organizers fastidiously obey the law, they clearly aim to scare those in the opposition movement who appear eager to cross the barriers.

Popular blogger and anti-corruption lawyer Alexei Navalny and Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov, the two leading organizers of the winter wave of protests, were sentenced to 15 days in jail for disobeying police following the May 6 rally that ended in clashes. Some Russian media reports speculated that they could face a longer prison term if accused of staging the violence.

The lawmakers who played a key role in protests, Ilya Ponomarev, Gennady Gudkov and Dmitry Gudkov, all members of the socialist Just Russia faction, have faced increasing pressure from the Kremlin party dominating the parliament.

On Tuesday, several members of the Kremlin party called for stripping the three of the immunity from prosecution they enjoyed as members of parliament.

"Go ahead, arrest deputies, put us behind bars, that will only speed up your demise," Gennady Gudkov, a KGB veteran turned fierce Putin critic, said during debates in the lower house. "Instead of political reforms, they want to only rely on force, but violence foments violence."

His son, Dmitry, tweeted Wednesday that the Kremlin party apparently is preparing to initiate a bill that would introduce a five-year prison term for organizers of the rallies that end in violence.

As part of the official pressure on the Gudkovs, a private security agency they own was targeted by authorities, who found some violations and ordered it stripped it of its arms.

In another move to tame the opposition, Putin's loyalists are also working on legislation that would raise the level of fines from the current maximum 5,000 rubles ($166) to 1,500,000 rubles ($50,000).

The rising official pressure comes as the opposition is desperately trying to maintain momentum amid the feelings of gloom that followed Putin's inauguration.

Some activists believe massive rallies are essential for shaking Putin's power, but others argue that the opposition must focus instead on grassroots activism and municipal elections, hoping they would help gradually make Russia a more open and pluralistic society.

Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the liberal Yabloko party, has warned the protest leaders against provoking police.

"If the organizers believe that the riot police cruelty will multiply the number of people eager to fight them, it's a wrong calculation," he wrote on his blog. "People will simply stop attending rallies and marches if blood is shed there, if they are beaten."

Trashing old, unused medications best for reducing environmental impact

Trashing old, unused medications best for reducing environmental impact [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 16-May-2012

A new study suggests that dumping old or unneeded medications in the trash can may be the best way to reduce the environmental impact of the 200 million pounds of pharmaceuticals that go unused in the U.S. each year. The report, which weighs the emissions from flushing, incinerating or trashing drugs, appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Stephen J. Skerlos and colleagues explain that to avoid the risks of abuse and accidental poisoning, as well as other problems that unused, unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals pose, they shouldn't be kept in homes. If thrown away or flushed down a toilet, however, antibiotics, hormones and other drugs can get into lakes, rivers and other water supplies, where they can affect humans and animals. Some places in the U.S. have recently started take-back programs, in which pharmacies collect unneeded drugs and incinerate them with other medical waste, but this burning and transportation produces greenhouse gases and other pollution. The authors wanted to assess the different disposal methods to see which might make the most sense for U.S. households.

Their evaluation shows that, on balance, trash disposal may be the best option in the U.S. Flushing unwanted drugs puts more drug compounds into the environment. Incineration of drugs taken back to a pharmacy could significantly reduce releases to the environment, but the authors note that take-back programs often have limited participation and could have major financial costs. A national program could cost $2 billion each year. A national participation rate of 50 percent in a take-back program, considered to be a high level of participation, would reduce releases of drugs by 93 percent, which is only five percent more than 100 percent participation in trash disposal. "Furthermore, since 60 percent of individuals in the U.S. already trash their unused pharmaceuticals, trash disposal is likely to accomplish faster removal of unused pharmaceuticals from households due to higher participation rates and greater convenience," the authors say.

Music Review: Delta Moon - Black Cat Oil - seattlepi.com

Delta Moon is a very popular band around metro Atlanta, which is where I live. Listening to Black Cat Oil will quickly make clear how they have gained such a loyal and growing following.

All of the songs on this CD are originals, except for an excellent cover of Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." The rest of the songs were written by founding member Tom Gray, with assistance from fellow founding member Mark Johnson on "Black Cat Oil," "Wishbone," "Black Coffee," and "Jukin'."

With a solid rhythm section providing a pounding beat and Tom Gray's slightly ragged-sounding vocals, Black Cat Oil has a great rootsy, bluesy rock sound from the very first song, "Down and Dirty." The CD was recorded at Atlanta's Bakos Amp Works studio with a basic drum setup, an upright bass and only three amps, according to the press release. They then used vintage amps and equipment from the '50s and '60s to get that authentic, swampy sound.

Every song on this CD is excellent. "Blues in a Bottle," Tom Gray says, came to him in a dream. In the press release, he explains that he dreamed that a guitarist was trying to decide the best way to play a song called "Blues in a Bottle." He wished he had come up with that title, "Then I awoke and discovered that I had." It's a great blues-rock tune, no matter how he came to write it.

"Walk Out in the River," is a song about sorrow and hope. It contains one of my favorite images: "There's a little girl down by the swimming pool side/Blowing bubbles with angels trapped inside/When the bubbles pop, the angels go free/ And they fly away to heaven cross the galaxy."

The song was inspired by Gray's bout with cancer. He is okay now, but a friend who also had cancer did not make it. He spun that experience into an incredibly moving song.

"Black Cat Oil" is pure Americana, celebrating, as many blues songs before it, the appeal of voodoo and its easy promises. If things don't go right with your Black Cat Oil, you just need to use a little more. "Wishbone" and "Black Coffee" are straight blues songs with some really tasty dual slide guitar work from Johnson and Gray.

My favorite song on the CD is "Neon Jesus," a slow, melodic walk on the wild side of your typical southern city, lighted both physically and emotionally by a neon Jesus on the top of a building. This song resonates with me on so many levels and represents the best qualities of Southern roots music with a contemporary touch.

"Jukin'" lightens the mood with a song in praise of finding those little out-of-the-way clubs and just having a mighty good time. "Sunshine" is a song about maybe not getting what you want, but getting what you need, with a very catchy, hook-filled musical accompaniment.

The last original song on the CD before the great McDowell tune mentioned earlier is "Applejack," which again features some fantastic guitar work and a joyful tribute to applejack and watermelon wine.

Overall, this CD is about hope and the things that get us through and keep us going. While it is Southern to its core, its message is universal and will touch people wherever they are, giving them a very enjoyable listening experience as well.

Pick up Black Cat Oil and get acquainted with Delta Moon. You'll be glad you did.

Despite flesh-eating bacteria, young woman's ... - Health and Fitness

After falling from a homemade zipline and cutting her leg, 24-year-old Aimee Copeland contracted a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection that has claimed one of her legs. NBC?s Gabe Gutierrez reports and TODAY?s Ann Curry talks with her parents, Andy and Donna, about Aimee?s recovery.

The parents of Aimee Copeland, the 24-year-old Georgia woman whose leg was amputated after contracting flesh-eating bacteria, told TODAY Monday they are optimistic about their daughter?s recovery. They have been communicating with her and she has begun to rely less on her respirator.

?We were able communicate with her through lip reading, which we?re becoming quite proficient at at this point.,? her father Andy Copeland told Ann Curry Monday.

Their daughter has a breathing tube down her throat, but is looking forward to being able to eat again, especially her favorite food: ice cream. ??

The flesh-eating infection?that led to the amputation of one of the young Georgia woman?s legs was caused by a bacteria found in warmer freshwater lakes and rivers. Even a wound as minor as a tiny scratch or cut can serve as the starting point of the?bacterial?infection?called necrotizing fasciitis, according to the National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation. On its website, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health says an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 cases occur in the United States each year, resulting in 2,000 to 3,000 deaths.

Aimee?will lose her fingers on both hands but doctors hope to save the palms of her hands, which would make it easier for her to use prosthetics, according to TODAY. She may also lose her right foot. She remains in critical condition in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, hospital spokeswoman Stacey Snyder said.

Dad Andy Copeland, who lives with his wife, Donna, in Spartanburg, S.C., has been sharing her roller-coaster?progress on blog posts and Facebook.

Almost two weeks ago, the University of West Georgia psychology grad student was kayaking with friends in the Little Tallapoosa River when she stopped to try a homemade zip line. She fell from the line and suffered a deep gash to her left leg, which required 22 staples to close.

Story: Woman fights for life after losing leg to flesh-eating bacteria

Over the following days, her pain increased and she was given antibiotics and an MRI. On May 4, a friend carried her to the ER and she was finally was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that breaks down muscle and fat and can lead to organ failure. The bacteria that infected Copeland is a bug called Aeromonas hydrophila.

Copeland reportedly was recently diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease, which might help explain why she became critically ill with an infection most would shrug off, says Dr. Chaim Putterman, chief of rheumatology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. ?It?s not only the bug,? Putterman told TODAY.com, but the interaction between the bug and the host, or patient.

In 2008, he coauthored a report about eight lupus patients hospitalized with necrotizing fasciitis at his hospital. Two of them died. Putterman says both lupus itself and the treatment for it could increase patients? risk of necrotizing fasciitis.

?Many of the medications that we use to treat lupus patients are what we call immunosuppressants,? says Putterman, who is not involved in Copeland?s case. ?Increased infection is one of the known prices we pay for those medications.?

In addition, in autoimmune diseases such as lupus, ?the immune system is out of whack,? Putterman says. So even without taking drugs to suppress their immune systems, people with autoimmune diseases are more susceptible to infections.

?Necrotizing fasciitis didn?t start when she fell in the water. It didn?t start with the stapling. It started later,? he says. ?But in these cases, minutes and hours do make a difference. It?s a rapidly progressing infection, so minutes count.?

The fact that Copeland has survived this long and that, according to her father, her lung function is improving, are both positive signs, Putterman says.

?What definitely is very, very much in her favor is that she?s 24 years-old,? he says. ?Young adults are definitely much more resilient than individuals at the extremes of ages.?

While Aimee?s condition is improving, doctors say she has a long recovery ahead of her.?

?It will be very difficult, in fact, her recovery will continue for the rest of her life,? Dr. Walter Ingram, Grady Memorial Hospital Burn Center, Atlanta, told TODAY.

Meanwhile, the Copelands told TODAY they are staying focused on her recovery, rather than how hurting her leg could have caused the life-threatening infection.

?Our focus is on trying to stay positive, look at the present and the future,? Andy told TODAY. We believe that future is going to be bright for Aimee.?

Critter & Guitari Buck the Trend with Hardware That Works Like a Music App [Video]

We write about music apps because they enable all sorts of amazing things that manufacturers could never do with hardware - or if they could, it would be prohibitively expensive. For example, if you had to buy a special MP3 player to display lyrics, you probably wouldn't do it - and yet that same function turned into software attracted over a million people in April alone. The Rise of Chemophobia In the News

I find much in the popular media to be anti-chemical. Invariably, "Chemical" is used as a perjorative, almost always being prefixed with either toxic or hazardous. Further, it seems that the term "organic" means without "chemicals", which is idiotic, since Every! Single! Thing! is composed of chemicals.

So, anyway, I have a wonderful time with the chemophobes, preferring to use the term "Organic" to refer to a class of covalently-bonded chemicals, primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms, with various other elements occasionally found.

So, most pesticides (with the exception of things like Bordeaux powder) are organic, as artificial sweeteners, etc. Water is never organic, btw.

It's a welcome trend for motorists, with the summer driving season just around the corner. And it eases some pressure on the U.S. economy, which has shown only agonizingly slow growth in the nearly three years since the Great Recession ended.

Oil?fell $4.05, or 4 percent, to $98.49, after a weak U.S. jobs report offered the latest evidence that the global economy is weakening, possibly reducing demand for?oil. At the same time, there is mounting evidence that world?oil?supplies are growing.

"The jobs report was the coup de grace," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "But it's hard to see how?prices?could have stayed on the boil given ample supplies and continued economic uncertainty."

For the week,?oil?fell more than $6 and is now about $12 below its February high. U.S. gasoline?prices?have fallen to $3.80 per gallon from a peak of $3.94 in early April.

Now they could go as low as $3.50 per gallon by July 4, according to Tom Kloza, Chief?Oil?Analyst at theOil?Price?Information Service.

Tony Wei, a mechanical engineer from Piscataway, NJ., will welcome lower?prices. He travels 100 miles every day to and from his job in Morris County, N.J. He's also planning a 500-mile trip to Canada and a 400-mile trip to southwest Virginia this summer in his Honda Accord.

"Definitely, I'm going to notice it," he said. "I buy so much gas."

The picture of the?oil?market is the reverse of just a few months ago. Then, world?oil?demand looked to be rising quickly at the same time that world supplies were threatened by a host of small production outages and the potential for drastically reduced production from Iran, the world's third-biggest exporter.

Those developments raised the prospect that world supplies would be at their most tenuous just as the summer driving season arrived in the developed world. The?price?of U.S. benchmark?oil?rose to about $110. The?price?for international?oil?used to make most of the gasoline in the U.S. spiked even higher, to $128 per barrel.

Gasoline?prices?in the U.S. appeared to be on track to soar past $4 per gallon nationwide, another burden for U.S. consumers already suffering from high unemployment and pitiful wage growth.

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ 42, picks LTE vendors and notches 1 million VoIP users

T-Mobile rolls out more HSPA+ 42, picks vendors for LTE and notches 1 million VoIP users

With CTIA 2012 getting under way, T-Mobile is the latest company to check in with an announcement, proudly informing the world of the latest developments in its 4G expansion efforts and Bobsled VoIP service. On the 4G (not faux G) front, it's selected "Release 10" hardware from Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks to support the $4 billion LTE rollout the company is undertaking (using AWS spectrum acquired from AT&T) starting this year and will continue through 2013. While nationwide LTE should be reality next year, right now T-Mobile is delivering HSPA+ to new markets, with HSPA+ 42 live today in Fayetteville and Little Rock AR, Lake Charles LA and Springfield, MO. Due later in the year, as expected, is 4G HSPA+ on the 1900 MHz band that should bring faster speeds, better building penetration and 4G access for the iPhone. While we're still not sure how the free Bobsled VoIP service figures into the company's plans, the company announced it has already broken through one million users. According to its stats, 95 percent are not T-Mobile wireless customers and 80 percent of calls originate from outside the country, however 90 percent of text messages sent are domestic. All the numbers and locations are in the press releases after the break, if you want to hunt down some high speed data action for yourself.

Karrine Steffans Details Ray J Taunting of Bobby Brown

The June issue of Vanity Fair takes an in-depth look at the life and death of Whitney Houston.

Written by Contributing Editor Mark Seal, the article delves into the late singer's love life, which is best known for her 15-year marriage to Bobby Brown, but which also included a dalliance with Kim Kardashian sex tape partner, Ray J.

Karrine Steffans - a self-proclaimed "Video Vixen," who has dated Brown, Ray J and Bill Maher, among other celebrities - is featured in the piece, telling Seal that Ray used to taunt Brown on a frequent basis.

One evening, according to Steffans, she received a call from J.

“He said, ‘Is Bob still staying with you?’ I said, ‘Yeah, he’s right here.’ And Ray said, ‘Tell him I f-cked both of his chicks, you and now his wife.’”

Ouch. Slam, yo!

Steffans goes on to side with Brown, who recently gave a defensive interview in which he shirked all responsibility for Houston's drug use.

“Bob’s big thing was everyone blamed him for her downfall, but when he met her she was already using drugs. He always felt very angry about that. He told me, ‘What everybody saw wasn’t the real Whitney.’ He always said her private persona - which you saw on Being Bobby Brown - was who she really was.”

93% Headhunters

All Critics (59) | Top Critics (12) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (4)

Headhunters is slick and spritely, a mixture of corporate skullduggery and low-life slapstick that plays like The Firm meets Blood Simple.

"Headhunters" is a well-oiled, nasty machine.

That's some good acting by Hennie, but it's also good writing by co-scribes Lars Gudmestad and Ulf Ryberg. They freshen up familiar caper and thriller tropes, adapting the bestselling prose Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbo.

This Norwegian thriller has a winning cutthroat perversity.

At a time when many mystery thrillers fall apart in the final fifteen minutes, Headhunters maintains its integrity.

The sex, nudity and violence are nonstop, but that's what makes "Headhunters" exciting entertainment.

A brisk, violent tour of the dangerous parts of Norway.

Whatever the cinematic equivalent of a kick in the pants might be, you'll find it at Headhunters.

Headhunters works best when punishing its lead excessively, continuously, and for no apparent reason.

...a first-class thriller with tension-enhancing music and Hitchcockian-quality cinematography highlighted by a sparkling performance by Aksel Hennie.

To say too much about this taut, and often quite gory, shocking and surprising twisty mystery would spoil the freezer-burn fun.

I can't remember the last time a movie surprised me as much as "Headhunters": not just its story twists and turns, which are considerable, but its continual stripping of character veneer and overall audaciousness left me breathless.

A nasty little crime thriller from Norway that twists you into a state of tense uncertainty right up to the end.

Headhunters is ridiculous, macabre, fun - see the original before it's irrevocably ruined by it's Hollywood remake.

With the twists of a cyclone and humor that on occasion edges close to farce, it's a knife-cutting satire that's not above a bellylaugh.

Acting is first rate, with a stellar turn by Aksel Hennie, and direction by Morten Tyldum is solid. I love seeing a terrific film from a place where you least expect it.

Wiz Khalifa Arrested For Marijuana Possession, Again

Wiz Khalifa has been arrested for marijuana possession, again.

It's the second such arrest in the last 10 days for the rapper.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina confirms that Wiz got popped for possession of marijuana after his concert in Winston-Salem last night.

Officers discovered 11.39 grams of pot after searching the rapper and his tour bus. It's unclear what prompted the search initially, but so it goes for Wiz.

Khalifa was cited, released and ordered to appear in court at a later date. He was just arrested for marijuana at the Holiday Inn in Nashville on April 21.
