In a further bid to dissuade Iran from continuing its nuclear program, an embargo against Iranian oil imports is thought to be on track to win approval by European Union foreign ministers when they meet at the end of the month, according to the Telegraph.
The tentative agreement was announced on Wednesday, just days after French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe renewed pressure for such an embargo, and less than a week after U.S. President Barack Obama signed legislation that will impose sanctions on foreign companies that do business with Iran.
Here are some of the key details about the proposed embargo and Iran's response to the increased pressure by global leaders to halt their nuclear program.
* The possibility of an embargo against oil imports from Iran was first discussed by the EU in December, but stalled over objections by Spain, Italy, and Greece. All three nations get a significant portion of their oil from Iran.
* If the embargo is approved at the end of the month, it is likely to be carried out in stages to allow other oil suppliers time to compensate for the shortage of Iranian oil imports.
* Europe accounts for 30 percent of Iran's total oil exports, according to the Telegraph, which equals out to approximately 450,000 barrels every single day.
* Iran has responded to the EU's proposed oil embargo by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, which is an essential transportation line for global oil supplies.
* Europe, China, and Japan are Iran's biggest oil buyers. On Thursday, Reuters reported that China has said that it will continue purchasing only half of its normal quantity of oil from Iran at least through February. Japan has also now announced that it is considering cutting back the amount of oil it purchases from Iran in order to avoid running afoul of the U.S. sanctions signed into law by President Obama last week.
* The International Herald Tribune has reported that oil and oil exports are responsible for as much as 60 percent of Iran's overall economy.
* The oil embargo, coupled with the new sanctions by the United States, are the toughest sanctions that Iran has faced yet over its fledgling nuclear program. Western nations have maintained that Iran is developing nuclear capabilities to be used militarily, which the Iranian government denies.
* At least part of the West's insistence that Iran intends to use any nuclear capabilities for military purposes comes from a recent assessment into Iran's intentions by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). That body concluded that Iran's plans for its nuclear program were absolutely geared towards military objectives.

Features and Specs
Included in the XAVB5004 kit is an XAV5001 Powerline 500 AV adapter, an XAV5004 Powerline 500AV 4-port adapter and power cord, two Ethernet cables, and a Resource CD with a quick install guide and Netgear?s Powerline Utility. As with the XAV5001 kit, Netgear does not include a user's guide on the CD but provides a link to one on their website. ?
The XAV5001 adapter is the same one that comes with the Powerline AV 500 Powerline Adapter Kit and measures 3.3 x 2.5 x 1.5 inches (HWD). The glossy white adapter weighs 0.4 pounds and sports three LED indicators that provide power and network activity status. ?A blinking green Power light means that the adapter is starting up or is going through a security setup, while a solid light means the adapter is powered up and ready to go. The light turns amber when the adapter goes into power saving mode.
The second light is the Powerline indicator. It glows various colors when the adapter is connected to a network and blinks when transmitting or receiving data. A solid green light means it has a link rate that is greater than 80 Mbps and an amber light means the link rate is somewhere between 50-80 Mbps. A red light indicates a slow rate of less than 50 Mbps. The third LED is solid green when the port is linked and blinks when there is network activity. The Ethernet port is located on the bottom of the adapter and there are Factory Reset and Security buttons on the right side. The housing has vents to help dissipate heat but the adapter tends to run warm after being plugged in for more than half an hour.
The XAV5004 is a 4-port switch. It has a shiny black finish and measures 1.2 x 5.4 x 3.9 inches (HWD). The Netgear logo is stamped on the top of the adapter, and there are three LEDs on the front panel that have? the same characteristics as the indicators on the XAV5001, with one small difference; the Power LED glows a solid blue when powered up and blinks blue when resetting or going through the security setup. You don?t get status LEDS for individual each port like you do with the D-Link DHP540 switch.
At the rear of the switch are four color-coded and numbered Ethernet ports, a security button, a recessed button for restoring the switch to its factory defaults, and a two?pronged power jack. The number 1 and 2 ports have green labels that identify them as high priority QoS (Quality of Service) ports for connecting to gaming consoles and HDTVs, for example. Data coming and going through these ports is given priority over other network traffic to ensure smooth video and multimedia playback. You can also set QoS priorities manually using the Netgear Powerline Utility.
Installation
Installing the XAVB5004 kit is painless. Start by plugging the XAV5001 adapter into an outlet close to your router and connect it to the router with one of the Ethernet cables. Next, plug the XAV5004 switch into an outlet as close to your internet-ready devices as possible. Use the Powerline LED to determine which outlet offers the best connectivity as not all outlets provide the same link rate. For example, you?ll want a solid green light for streaming HD video to an HDTV.
If you want to add 128-bit AES encryption, push the security button on the switch and hold it for two seconds until it blinks. Within two minutes, press the security button on the second adapter and it will be assigned the same randomly generated encryption key as the first adapter. You now have a four port gigabit switch that can be used to bring wired Ethernet to all of your home entertainment devices, including web-enabled HDTVs and blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and streaming boxes such as Roku, Boxee, and Apple TV.
In addition to assigning QoS priority, the Powerline Utility software scans your network and displays the model number, MAC address, and firmware version of each connected device. Clicking on a device gives you the ability to name it and manually assign an encryption key and a QoS priority. You can also update the firmware with the click of a mouse button.
Performance
The XAVB5004 kit worked like a charm. The Powerline Utility detected a link rate of 500 Mbps from the adapter to the router and 156 Mbps from the adapter to the switch, which is more than adequate for streaming HD video and right in line with the DHP540?s rate of 158 Mbps. Episodes of The Office in HD streaming via Netflix played smoothly with no trace of lag and the soundtrack was perfectly synced to the video. Copying a 100MB folder via the XAVB5004 took 17 seconds, while a 500MB folder took 1 minute and 13 seconds. The D-Link DHP-540 was a bit faster with speeds of 13 seconds (100 MB) and 1 minute and 8 seconds (500 MB). By way of comparison, it took 1 minute and 18 seconds to copy the 100MB folder over my wireless 802.11 N network and a whopping 9 minutes and 25 seconds to copy the 500 MB folder.

After Ole Miss cut Florida's lead to four points late, Jones stepped up and nailed her fourth 3-pointer of the game and gave the Gators a 58-51 lead with 3:13 remaining, as Florida held on to collect its first Southeastern Conference road win of the season and improved to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.
?We can look at a lot of different things, but we just won,? UF head coach Amanda Butler said. ?We won the possessions that matter most and during the critical moments we came up with big plays. This certainly wasn't the way we drew up this game, but that's also what I mean by we just won. We did what we had to do. Especially on the road and definitely in the SEC sometimes the best-laid plans don't work and sometimes you have to go to plan ?B' and even plan C.?
George finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds while dishing three assists, as her double-double streak of seven is tied for the sixth longest streak in program history.
?Jennifer was a big part of our win,? Butler shared. ?It felt like she took a lot of contact and handled that with a lot of poise and composure and made big plays, sometimes on her second shot after they blocked her first one. She really came around after being challenged.?
Jones also scored 18 points, converting 6-of-9 overall from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and 2-of-3 from the free throw line.

UM's Nikki Byrd led the Rebels with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Valencia McFarland added 13 points and Kenyotta Jenkins at 10 points and 10 rebounds, helping Ole Miss out-rebound Florida, 43-37, and snap the Gator's 11 game run of winning the battle of the boards.
After Ole Miss cut Florida's halftime lead to five points, 37-32, the Gators used a 9-2 run to take a 46-34 advantage with 16:24 remaining, as Jordan Jones scored five during the span and Azania Stewart and Jennifer George both dropped in two.
The Rebels responded by scoring the next eight points of the game over a 4:20 span and closed within four points, 46-42, with 11:42 on the clock.
George halted the run with one free throw, but Ole Miss continued its march with an inside bucket from LaTosha Laws, as the Rebels crept within three points with 11:17 to go.
Florida had a couple chances to build on its lead, but missed chip shots inside and turned the ball over. Ole Miss couldn't take advantage and George ended both team's respective dry spells with an offensive rebound put-back with 9:07 remaining. George then converted one of two free throws and had the Gators ahead 50-44, before Florida turned up its defensive pressure and forced a shot clock violation with just under eight minutes remaining.
Jordan Jones came out hot from the media timeout and nailed her second 3-pointer of the game and gave Florida a 53-44 lead with 7:37 remaining.
Ole Miss answered with a 5-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Nikki Byrd.
Azania Stewart stepped out and hit a 12-foot jumper, before Byrd hit two more free throws and kept the Gator lead at four points, 55-51, with 4:19 to go.
Neither team could convert offensively for the next two minutes, before Jones canned a 3-pointer in front of the Gator bench and lifted Florida to a 58-51 advantage with 3:13 on the clock.
Maggie McFerrin scored a deep bucket with 1:46 remaining and cut UF's lead to five with 1:46.
Lanita Bartley, who was hampered in the second half with an ankle sprain, hit one free throw with 38.8 seconds remaining and gave the Gators a 59-53 lead, but Ole Miss continued to press and Kenyotta Jenkins put back an offensive rebound and had the Rebels within four points with 17 seconds remaining.
Jones had a chance to seal the game at the line, but missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving life to the Rebels, who were unable to close the gap and the Gators walked off with their first SEC road win of the year.
Florida got off to a slow start, turning the ball over three times in its first four offensive possessions, while Ole Miss jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead. The Gators managed to attempt just three shots over the opening four-plus minutes of the game, while the Rebels connected on 4-of-10 during the early span.
The Rebels continued their game-opening spurt with another bucket and extended their lead to nine points.
Deana Allen ended the run with a 3-pointer from the left side at the 14:32 mark and the teams traded buckets, with Florida's coming from Azania Stewart, who knocked down a 16-footer from straight away and ignited a 13-0 run over the next 5:06, as Allen, Jones and Andrea Vilar? Aragon?s (Barcelona, Spain) also scored during the stretch and gave the Gators an 18-13 lead.
Jones scored seven points during the run, three of which came from a 3-pointer, as she connected on deep for the 11th consecutive game, a streak tied for the 12th longest of its kind in program history.
Whitney Hameth finally ended the run as she collected a loose defensive rebound and ran the length of the court for a tough layin.
George came right back with a fastbreak bucket for the Gators, with one of Jaterra Bonds' three assists of the first half.
Ole Miss then scored the next four points and closed within one point, 20-19, with 6:59 remaining. The team traded scores before the Gators ripped off a 10-0 run with eight points from George, who gave Florida a 32-21 lead, with 3:08 remaining in the period.
The hosts came right back with the next seven points and cut UF's lead to four points, 32-28, before Lily Svete scored the final five points of the half and the Gators headed into the halftime locker room with a 37-28 lead.
Eight different Gators scored during the first half, paced by 12 from George, who also collected six rebounds. Florida regrouped from a slow start and connected on 46.7 percent from the floor, hitting 14-of-30 overall and 3-of-7 from long range.

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Looking past Iowa, Mitt Romney defended his conservative credentials Tuesday as he anticipated escalated attacks in New Hampshire and beyond from his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.
"Perhaps people forget that I ran for president four years ago, you may recall that along with Mike Huckabee I was the conservative alternative to John McCain," Romney said on Fox News Channel. He was responding to rival Newt Gingrich, who had accused Romney of lying about his moderate record. Romney said Gingrich, who has fallen in polls in the face of negative attack ads by Romney's allies, was "apparently angry."
"I've got a record, and it's a conservative record," Romney said.
Romney has spent most of the nearly four years since he dropped out of the 2008 race trying to win over a skeptical GOP base. He's had trouble with the party's right wing, which so far has jumped from candidate to candidate as it searches for a conservative alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.
Romney said he is anticipating stepped up criticism from the Republican field in the wake of the leadoff Iowa caucuses Tuesday night.
"It's a long road, Romney told MSNBC. "I expect people to come after me. And if I do well here, I'll have a target painted on me, and so I expect other folks to come after me. And, you know, if I can't stand up to that, I shouldn't be the nominee."
In a show of force, Romney announced he was running TV ads in Florida, signaling that he has the money and the organization to wage a long-haul campaign.
Florida holds its primary at the end of the month, on Jan. 31.
The ad, which also has run in Iowa, is positive in tone and sells Romney as a candidate of "steadiness and constancy." So far, Romney hasn't aired negative TV ads. Instead, an independent organization that supports his candidacy has spent millions on ads harshly critical of rivals Gingrich and Rick Perry. The Restore Our Future super PAC is also on the air in Florida with negative ads.
Romney on Tuesday backpedaled a bit from his earlier prediction of a first-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.
"It's hard to predict exactly what's going to happen," he said on MSNBC. "I think I'll be among the top group."
But he was more bullish Monday night, telling hundreds of supporters in the Iowa town of Clive that he would win the caucuses ? and, eventually, the GOP nomination for president.
Still, Romney said Tuesday the top three finishers "will get a good send-off" into New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida, the first three primary states.
Hours before the caucuses, Romney made a final pitch to voters in an ornate ballroom at the Temple for the Performing Arts in Des Moines.
Democrats will "poison the American spirit by pitting one American against another and engaging in class warfare," Romney said. "I believe in an America that is one nation under God, and I will keep it that way."
His chief opponents, polls show, are Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Thousands of caucus-goers remained undecided.
The former Massachusetts governor planned an evening gathering at the Hotel Fort Des Moines to await the caucus results.
Romney faces the same challenge here that he had in 2008: winning over conservatives skeptical of his moderate record, his changes on the social issues that are important to the state's many evangelical Christian voters and his Mormon faith.
But Romney faces diminished threats here from the two candidates his campaign worried most about: Perry and Gingrich. Instead of focusing on his rivals, Romney has set his sights on Democratic President Barack Obama.
Perry is skipping next week's primary in New Hampshire, where Romney is favored, to compete instead in the first-in-the-South primary in South Carolina. Gingrich's standing in polls has been badly damaged by a barrage of negative ads from Romney allies.
Romney has been ever more confident as he campaigned across Iowa after Christmas. He's been buoyed by large crowds and the excitement they've shown. And while Romney's advisers acknowledge that an Iowa win is far preferable to a second- or third-place finish, they say they're prepared to compete nationally in a way the other candidates rivals aren't.
