Fewer injuries for winning soccer teams

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? All soccer players and fans know that it is better to win than to lose. Yet the fact that victory also means less risk of injury is not as obvious. New findings from researchers in sports medicine at Link?ping University have aroused great interest among Europe's elite soccer teams.

H?kan Bengtsson, a master's student in physiotherapy, has analysed data from 6272 games played by 26 of the top European clubs. The material comprises 2739 injuries and constitutes the world's largest database of its kind. The results was tabled at a regional conference on physiotherapy in Link?ping March 22.

Based on information the clubs sent to the Swedish researchers once a month, H?kan Bengtsson then examined how the injury rate is influenced by three factors:

• the result
• home or away match
• type of competition

It turned out that the outcome of the match had the clearest correlation with the proportion of injuries. For teams that lost, the risk of injury was 21 percent greater than for the winning teams; in drawn games the risk was 15 percent higher.

"We have not established which is the chicken or the egg. The most likely scenario is that a player was injured during the match, which subsequently lead to a loss. The bottom line is that the clubs' medical work is vital to the results," says H?kan Bengtsson.

Bengtsson was somewhat surprised that a higher injury risk ensued for the home team than the away team. One conceivable explanation is that home teams play more aggressively coupled with longer and faster running sorties. With regard to the type of competition, Champions League matches appeared somewhat more dangerous than for the rhythm of the domestic leagues.

Health insurance exchange passes Senate | Politicker NJ

TRENTON ? The Senate released the ?New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act,? bill that would create a statewide health insurance exchange, as called for by the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The bill, S1319/A2171 is sponsored by Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), of Montclair, and Sen. Joseph Vitale, (D-19), of Woodbridge.

It passed 22-13, along party lines.

The exchange would be run by an eight-member board of directors. The commissioners of banking and insurance and human services would serve as nonvoting members.

The governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate, would appoint five of the members. The members on the board would serve on a part-time basis for an annual salary of $50,000.

The board would create a Basic Health Plan, consistent with the provisions of the federal act. The board will also establish the State Business Health Options Program to assist participating employers in facilitating the enrollment of their employees in qualified plans.

Eligible employers would include as of January 2014 employers with at least two but no more than 50 employees; beginning January 2016, those with from 51 to 100 employees, and, beginning January 2017, those with more than 100 employees.

The bill would also establish the New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Trust Fund in the Department of Treasury as a ?non-lapsing revolving fund.?

Sen. Robert Singer, (R-30), Lakewood,?called the bill ?premature,? especially since the federal government is providing extensions to other states on the program. ?The Supreme Court is due to hear arguments later this month on the constitutionality of the law, dubbed Obamacare. It is possible all or portions of the law could be struck down by the court.

Singer called for having people from the Banking and Insurance and Human Services departments work on this issue, as opposed to having appointees serve on a board, each of whom would receive $50,000.

?By paying $50,000, we?re creating another bureaucracy,? he said. ?We are trying to make government smaller.? ?

You're Going to Want to Write THESE Down! | 'No Sweat' Public ...

Fortunately, I?ve been doing a lot of speaking lately.

During the Q&A Session, one question I?m frequently asked is, ?How can I lessen my Fear of Public Speaking and become a better Presenter?

There are a number of answers to this question, and I think a blog post, categorizing them, is appropriate. ?Here it is!

Lessen the Fear of Public Speaking

• Know your material.
• If you don?t have a great knowledge about what you?re presenting, you should?have fear!
• Use Google Alerts to keep updated on the latest information for the subject you?ll be speaking about.
• Structure your presentation properly.
• A delicious cake is the result of a great recipe, that has:?specific?ingredients, in specific amounts, added at specific?times, in a specific manner.
• Professional presentations also follow a ?Recipe.?
• The?Title should draw people in to see and hear you.
• Think of it as the:
• Headline of a newspaper article.
• Subject Line of an email.
• Spine of a book.
• If the above don?t grab attention and interest, people won?t want to know more.
• Write your own Introduction.
• It is not your biography.
• It should answer the questions:
• Why this subject?
• Why this speaker?
• Why now?
• Think of the Introduction as the King?s Trumpeters announcing his arrival! ?It should build the audience?s anticipation for you, the speaker!
• Open your speech with something that Grabs the Attention of the people you?re speaking to.
• Next, Tell them What you?ll be Telling Them, and how you?ll be handling questions.
• The formula for the Body of the presentation is:
• Make a Point ? Tell a Story to support that point.
• Three to five points per presentation.
• Personal stories are best!
• The Conclusion has two parts.

1. Tell the audience what you told them.
2. Have a Strong Closing.

• The last thing the audience sees and hears will be the first thing they will remember.

Arrive early to your event to Meet & Greet?your audience.

• It is amazing how much easier it is to talk to people you?ve met, if even for a moment. ?It is a great anxiety reducer!

Question & Answer Session

• Take questions?before?your Closing.
• State that in your Opening when you give the audience a ?road map? of how you?ll be proceeding.
• The?Closing?is the?Closing?- Period.
• Taking questions throughout a presentation, unless it is a workshop, is extremely hard to do and not wise for a number of reasons.

Practice! ? Practice! ? Practice!

• Practice in front of a mirror.
• Practice out loud.
• Practice with a video recorder and watch?yourself!
• Practice with friends and family as an audience and ask for constructive feedback.
• Malcomb Gladwell, in his best selling book, ?Outliers?, says it takes 10,000 hours to become a Expert.
• He also says,??Practice isn?t the thing you do once you?re good.
  It?s the thing you do that makes you good.?
• Athletic?Coaches tell us, ?We?ll play as we practice.? ?They are correct!

Speak! ? Speak! ? Speak!

• If you want to be a great baker ? Bake!
• If you want to be a great swimmer ? Swim!
• If you want to be a great speaker ? Speak!
• The Learning is in the Doing!
