Yahoo revenue dips in Q2, shares fall 2 percent (Reuters)
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc plugged some of the holes that were weakening its Internet search business in the second quarter, but revealed new challenges that hurt its display advertising business.
The Internet company reported a slight decline in net revenue in the second quarter, as efforts to restructure its sales force caused disruptions that crimped revenue.
Shares of Yahoo, which are down more than 20 percent since their 52-week high of $18.84 in mid-May, were down 2.3 percent at $14.26 in after hours trading.
"They're trying to fix a lot of problems that do need to be fixed, but unfortunately as they're fixing those problems, new ones are popping up," said Macquarie Research analyst Ben Schachter.
"At the end of the day it's another disappointment," he said of the company's second quarter results.
Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz, who is halfway through a four-year contract, is confronting a number of challenges in her quest to revitalize the Internet pioneer, including setbacks in a search partnership with Microsoft and tensions with Chinese partner Alibaba Group.
Meanwhile, the company is facing tough competition from social networking giant Facebook. A recent report by research firm eMarketer predicted that Facebook will displace Yahoo this year and collect the biggest slice of online display advertising dollars in the United States.
In a conference call with analysts on Thursday, Bartz said the shortfall in its display advertising business was not due to changes in the competitive landscape or to worsening business conditions.
A restructuring of the sales force - aimed at positioning Yahoo for more robust growth in the future - led to greater than anticipated employee turnover and left Yahoo under-equipped to meet demand, she said.
"The issue was we did not have enough sales people in front of the big clients," said Bartz.
The company forecast third-quarter net revenue, which excludes the fees that Yahoo pays to partner websites, of between $1.05 billion and $1.1 billion.
Yahoo executives said the company continued to make progress in efforts to unlock value from its Asian assets, which include a roughly 40 percent stake in China's Alibaba Group.
Yahoo's rocky relationship with Alibaba has raised questions about the extent to which it could profit from those assets. In May it was revealed that Alibaba had abruptly handed Alipay -- one of Alibaba's crown jewels -- to a company controlled by Alibaba founder Jack Ma.
Alibaba has said the transfer was necessary to comply with new Chinese regulations that restrict foreign ownership in e-payment companies.
"We've been working on this negotiation continuously, in fact daily," said Bartz.
But, she added, "until every word is finalized and every document is signed we're simply not done."
THE SEARCH GAP
Yahoo reported net income of $237 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with $213 million, or 15 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, on average, were looking for 18 cents.
Yahoo's results come a few days after Google, the world's No.1 Internet search engine, reported better-than-expected profit and revenue.
Yahoo Chief Financial Officer Tim Morse told Reuters that the company was making progress in rectifying some of the problems in its search partnership with Microsoft, which had hurt Yahoo's revenue per search.
Last quarter, Yahoo said its search partnership with Microsoft was taking longer than expected to pay off due to technical imperfections in the search advertising system. As a result, Yahoo said its revenue per search won't rise to levels it experienced pre-Microsoft until the end of the year.
"Of the gap that we identified as of the April call, we closed about 20 percent of it in this quarter," said Morse.
Search revenue declined 45 percent year-over-year to $467 million.
Yahoo said net revenue in the second quarter was roughly $1.1 billion, compared with $1.13 billion in the year-earlier period and in line with Wall Street expectations.
ThinkEquity analyst Aaron Kessler said the signs of progress on search were encouraging, but said the market would be watching what happens with the company's display business in the months ahead.
"It makes for a little more caution on the core business," he said.

FTSE drops before eurozone summit (AFP)
LONDON (AFP) ? London shares fell on Thursday as investors awaited an emergency eurozone summit set to discuss a new bailout deal for Greece amid a spreading eurozone debt crisis.
The FTSE 100 index of top shares dropped 0.46 percent to 5,826.78 points in morning deals.
Elsewhere in Europe Frankfurt's DAX 30 declined 0.68 percent to 7,172.34 points while in Paris the CAC 40 index shed 0.49 percent to 3,736.35.
The Stoxx 50 index of leading eurozone companies declined by 0.25 percent to 2,698.96 points.
"The last two days have seen a small rise in equities as traders wagered on EU finance ministers taking one step towards solving their sovereign debt issues," said Manoj Ladwa, senior trader at ETX Capital.
"But this mini-rally seems to have run out of steam this morning as traders move to the sidelines ahead of any announcement," he added.
Ahead of the summit's start, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the eurozone's key players, agreed on a "common position" after late-night talks in Berlin.
The French government said the agreement was a precondition to ending the eurozone debt crisis.
"It was an indispensable precondition to reassure our partners," government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse told France 2 television.
"We must build the widest possible consensus and the first building block of that consensus, is obviously a common position" between France and Germany, she added.
Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei stock average finished flat on Thursday, after a day of cautious, thin trade with a strong yen hurting sentiment ahead of the key summit to address Greece's debt woes, traders said.
US stocks fell slightly on Wednesday as investors waited for a resolution to the debt-ceiling standoff in Washington and digested a mixed bag of second-quarter earnings reports.
Traders were also closely watching developments in Washington, where US President Barack Obama was set to meet with opposition Republican leaders to seek a compromise solution to the debt-ceiling battle.
The White House has warned that failure to raise the debt limit by August 2 could lead to a US government default, which Obama has characterized as economic "Armageddon".

Preparing the room itself begins by carefully removing the baseboards and setting them aside, if you plan to reuse or repaint them. Next, old carpeting must be removed. Extreme dips should be filled and high spots flattened to ensure that the laminate flooring will be stable and firm underfoot.
Prepare the doorjambs by laying a piece of the underlayment and a plank next to the jamb and drawing a line showing the height of the new floor. This is where the doorjamb must be cut to make room for the new laminate flooring.
Following these simple preparations will ensure that the planks will slip into place smoothly and easily, with minimal stress or effort. To install your own planks, simply measure the rooms carefully, order an additional 20%, be sure to order the foam underlayment, plus plastic sheeting if necessary, gather all of the tools, put on your favorite music, and watch the magic happen as you transform a room with your own two hands!

Nevada (US), July 17 (ANI): Despite six years into high-flown ?Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015? initiative, the Roma (Gypsy) people of Europe still reportedly live in apartheid like conditions, the Hindus have stressed.
Esteemed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) on Saturday, said that almost everybody involved in Roma upliftment programs would agree that Roma continued to face deeply embedded institutional discrimination and social exclusion. Concrete steps were immediately needed to improve their plight, whose traces in Europe go back to ninth century CE.
Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, argues that in spite of this much publicized ?Inclusion? initiative involving political commitment by governments of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia to improve the socio-economic status and social inclusion of Roma, they unfortunately reportedly continue to suffer from human rights violations and brazen structural discrimination.
Zed further says that on paper, Roma are fully covered by European Union legislation, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of ethnic origin in employment, social protection and education as well as access to goods and services, including housing.
But in reality, Roma reportedly regularly face racism, substandard education, hostility, social exclusion, joblessness, rampant illness, inadequate housing, lower life expectancy, unrest, living on desperate margins, language barriers, stereotypes, mistrust, rights violations, discrimination, marginalization, appalling living conditions, prejudice, human rights abuse, racist slogans on Internet, etc.
Zed urged Macedonia, which took over Presidency of "Roma Decade" initiative starting July one, to deliver effective implementation, firm commitment and strong political will to improve the Roma plight. In the past, policies on paper to tackle Roma discrimination and exclusion had proved very weak to deal with their day-to-day sufferings. It was simply immoral to let this around 15-million population of Europe continually suffer and face human rights violations. (ANI)
