Due to the history of the company you see Jandy pool heaters sold under a number of names. I have seen them under Laars Pool Heaters, Teledyne Laars Pool Heaters and Jandy Pool Heaters. I have made an attempt to very briefly cover the history below.
The originial company was Laars Engineers formed in 1948. It was bought by Teledyne in the mid 1960s and became Teledyne Laars. In 1996 Teledyne bought Jandy Industries and started marketing their pool heaters under that name (but sometimes including the Laars name). Shortly afterwards the business was divided into 3 with Jandy having the residential pool business and Laars Heating Systems the business side. In 2007 Jandy merged with Zodiac Marine to create Zodiac Pool Products and create ?a major global supplier of pool equipment?. In the current Zodiac Brochure two of their three heaters are branded Jandy and one Zodiac (but the name Laars still often appears when these are sold).??? ?
The current range of Jandy pool heaters comprises:
Jandy Hi-E2 (although officially this is the Zodiac Hi-E2) ? A top quality 350k gas pool heater for residential or commercial applications (it is ASME certified). The energy efficiency is an incredible 95% (and it is low NOx) putting it well ahead of other gas heaters. It is designed for long life and low maintenance and built using top quality materials. The negative with this heater is the cost as it is about triple the price of other Jandy pool heaters.
Jandy LXi ? A range of gas heaters from 250k ? 400k BTU/hr (models for natural gas and propane) with an energy efficiency of 88%. In addition they have low NOx emissions meeting all requirements in this respect. These heaters have a feature rich control panel which can be mounted remotely.
Jandy Legacy ? Ranging from 125 ? 400k BTU these gas pool heaters are available in both electronic and millivolt versions. They are 83% efficient and make no claim to be low NOx. The legacy heaters have a number of advanced features, are designed to be reliable and are relatively inexpensive, making then good value for money.
Jandy Heat Pump ? There are 3 heat pumps in the range at 100, 115 and 131 BTU. The two higher capacity models have a chiller/defrost option that enables the heat pumps to function in low temperatures and also cool the pool when necessary. All models feature a standard titanium heat exchanger (with lifetime warranty against corrosion). The heat pumps require a 40amp electricity supply.
Which should you choose? There are two key factors to consider. How often will you use the pool heater and will you consider a higher purchase price in anticipation of savings in the years ahead? If you want to heat the pool all the time during the season then a heat pump will best meet your needs even though they are not cheap to buy. If you do not heat your pool constantly then a gas heater will get it up to temperature faster and the difference in running costs may be offset by the cheaper price. In this case the Hi-E2, good though it is, would seem to be rather over the top leaving the choice between the LXi and the Legacy. If NOx emissions are an issue in your location then it will have to be the LXi but if not the legacy would seem to be the best buy. Of course if you need a millivolt heater then the Legacy is the only option from Jandy pool heaters.

O Music Awards To Return This Year!
This time, fans can submit category ideas and suggest nominees for the digital music awards show.

Most awards shows wait 12 months to crank the machine up again, but MTV's pioneering O Music Awards doesn't have time for all that, so it will be back on the block before year's end.
Not only that, but in a first, the second edition will crowd-source the nomination categories and nominees, giving fans an even bigger hand in deciding which artists will be up for awards.
Submit category ideas and suggest nominees for the next O Music Awards now!
April's inaugural edition scored MTV's second-biggest live-stream audience ever, rocking Las Vegas' Fremont Street with performances by Mumford & Sons and VMA nominees Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco and Lil B, as well as a world record for the longest freestyle rap by Chiddy Bang's Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege.
Beginning today (August 10), fans will be able to submit category ideas and suggest nominees, with five user-submitted categories slated to make it into the show.
The show's first-time winners included Lady Gaga (Most Innovative Artist and Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel's Aliens (Fan Army FTW), Thirty Seconds to Mars (NSFW Music Video), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog) and MJJ Fan Community (Best Fan Forum).

Nani double fires Manchester United fightback against City (AFP)
LONDON (AFP) ? Manchester United underlined their determination to hold off the challenge from title rivals Manchester City as Nani's last-gasp winner clinched a 3-2 victory in the Community Shield on Sunday.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side trailed 2-0 at half-time after big-spending City took advantage of poor goalkeeping from new signing David De Gea to score through Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko.
But United had been the better side for much of the first period and the champions tore into City after the break, equalising thanks to goals from Chris Smalling and Nani before the Portuguese winger snatched the stoppage time winner.
It was the perfect way for United, who have won this curtain-raiser to the English season four times in the last five years, to conclude their pre-season programme ahead of the start of the Premier League campaign next weekend.
"I couldn't believe we were 2-0 down at half-time after it looked like we were controlling the game but credit to the players, they kept their heads," Ferguson said.
"They have courage to keep the ball and are not intimidated by rough tackling."
City boss Roberto Mancini added: "I'm disappointed because we had a 2-0 lead but I think they played better than us. When you go up 2-0 you need to control the game."
Ferguson has always played down the significance of the Community Shield, but the bitter memories of last season's FA Cup semi-final defeat against City provided United with more motivation than usual.
England winger Ashley Young, making a confident start after his move from Aston Villa, took advantage of his license to drift infield to link up with Wayne Rooney and advanced to a threatening position before Lescott came across to block the shot.
This may have been a friendly in name but the derby factor and a feeling FA Cup winners City will be the main challengers for United's title gave an added spice to the occasion.

If De Gea was partly at fault for the first goal, the Spaniard will surely feel he should have done much better with the second.
Dzeko took possession 25 yards from goal and, when United's defenders backed off, the Bosnian tried his luck with a long-range effort.
There was power and swerve in Dzeko's strike but De Gea should still have saved it. Instead he dived late and the ball flashed past his out-stretched arm.
Ferguson made three changes at half-time, hauling off Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick, and United were back in the game within seven minutes as Dzeko undid his earlier good work.
When Young curled in a free-kick, Dzeko allowed Smalling to run free and the defender had yards of space to volley past Joe Hart from close-range.
United had rediscovered the verve that swept through City for much of the first half and they equalised with a breathtaking move in the 58th minute.
Nani started it with a pass into Rooney and the England forward clipped the ball onto substitute Tom Cleverley, whose measured return allowed Nani to burst past Hart and lift a fine finish into the roof of the net.
With no extra time it looked like penalties would be needed to settle the tie as the four minutes of stoppage time wound down.
But there was a sting in the tail as United punted a clearance down-field from a City corner.
Nani was the only United player anywhere near the ball and he evaded Vincent Kompany's weak attempted tackle, sprinted clear to round Hart and slotted home the winner with virtually the last kick.

Pa. man arrested for cutting tree that floods home
PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A Pittsburgh man has been arrested after police say he cut down a city-owned tree, which the man claims contributes to basement flooding.
Thirty-nine-year-old David Harper is charged with criminal mischief and possessing an instrument of crime ? his neighbor's chain saw.
Police tell WTAE-TV (http://bit.ly/oDpl6T ) that they charged Harper on Thursday after he cut the sidewalk tree nearly in half. Public works crews were called to cut the tree down after city officials determined it was unstable and could fall on someone.
Online court records don't list an attorney for Harper, and The Associated Press could not locate a listed home phone for him. Police say Harper told them he hated the tree because it buckled the sidewalk, causing rain water to flow into his basement.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? An attorney for one of two Iraqi refugees arrested in Kentucky on terrorism charges is weighing in on the question of whether his client should be tried in a civilian court.
Scott Wendelsdorf, public defender for Waad Ramadan Alwan, has argued in a motion that two counts of his client's indictment should be dismissed because the Geneva Convention doesn't allow those charges to be prosecuted in a U.S. civilian court.

Columbia, MO Ray Semlitsch, Curators' Professor of Biology in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri, is the recipient of the 2011 Fitch Award for Excellence in Herpetology from the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. This honor recognizes individuals who have demonstrated long-term excellence in the study of amphibian and/or reptile biology.
A leader of amphibian ecology and wetland conservation, Semlitsch is well-known for his research on the mechanisms of persistence of amphibian populations in altered habitats. His studies on the chemical contamination of farmlands have documented that tolerance to direct contaminants, such as insecticides, varies among species of amphibians, and that sub-lethal concentrations for amphibians have an indirect effect on food resources that cause mortality. He also established the ecological connection between aquatic and terrestrial environments for semi-aquatic amphibian species and defined the land around wetlands as an essential part of a species' "core habitat" and critical for management and protection.
"Dr. Semlitsch's research has spanned from basic ecology and life history evolution of amphibians to applied work on conservation of amphibians work that will have a lasting impact on the way we will conduct science for years to come," said Michelle D. Boone, associate professor of zoology at Miami University, who nominated Semlitsch for the award.
Recently, he drew popular attention with research that showed that amphibian populations could thrive in properly buffered golf course ponds as well as in sustainably timbered forests.
Semlitsch's research has garnered him many awards and honors, including the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity. He received the National Wetlands Award for Science Research from The Environmental Law Institute in 2008, and was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2009.
Semlitsch has been the assigning or associate editors of Conservation Biology, Ecological Applications, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, and Herpetologica. He was editor of the influential book Amphibian Conservation, has authored over 200 scientific journal articles, and secured over $2 million in competitive research funding.

Kids Still See Unhealthy-Food Ads on TV, Study Finds (HealthDay)
TUESDAY, Aug. 2 (HealthDay News) -- American children see fewer food and drink ads on television today, but most of the ads they view are for unhealthy products, a new study says.
The study also found a large jump in children's exposure to TV ads for fast-food restaurants.
The findings suggest food industry self-regulation has done little to reduce children's exposure to ads for unhealthy products, the researchers said.
They examined changes in food, beverage and restaurant TV ads seen by children before and after the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative was enacted in 2006. Companies in the voluntary program agreed to limit ads for unhealthy foods and beverages that target children 11 years and younger.
From 2003 to 2009, daily exposure to food, beverage and restaurant ads fell by 18 percent among children ages 2 to 5 and by 7 percent among children ages 6 to 11. But in 2009, 86 percent of all TV food and beverage ads targeted at children 11 years and younger still featured unhealthy products high in saturated fat, sugar or sodium.
This percentage was even higher (88 percent) among companies that were part of the voluntary program to limit such ads, the study authors noted.
"Our findings show that industry self-regulation has had limited impact, particularly on the types of products companies continue to advertise," lead researcher Lisa M. Powell, of the University of Illinois at Chicago and Bridging the Gap, a national research program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said in a foundation news release.
"There was greater improvement in ads targeting kids ages 2 to 5, but more limited progress for ads seen by kids ages 6 to 11. And fast-food ads increased substantially -- kids 11 and under are seeing more ads for fast food than any other type of food," she added.
The study was published Aug. 1 in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A crisis-conquering deficit-reduction agreement struck by the White House and congressional leaders after months of partisan rancor picked up momentum in the Senate Monday, as a member of the Republican leadership predicted at least 30 GOP votes.
"Maybe 35 will support it in the end. There will be some who will pull back," Sen. Mike Crapo, the deputy Republican whip, told reporters, as climactic votes approached in both the House and Senate on the long-sought spending plan.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said a vote could come as early as Monday as he opened the day's session by declaring the deal shows that the often-dysfunctional Senate can come together when it counts. "People on the right are upset, people on the left are upset, people in the middle are upset," he said. "It was a compromise."
Crapo's assessment came as Vice President Joe Biden, who played an instrumental role in successful weekend efforts to hammer out an accord, went to Capitol Hill to sell the plan in separate meetings with House and Senate Democrats.
Relief around the world was indisputable, with Asian shares on Monday enjoying one of the best sessions in weeks. The advance continued in Europe. Wall Street opened higher, but faltered on a report that a key manufacturing index had dropped sharply in July.
"We have averted an economic crisis," declared Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate's second-ranked Democrat.
Whatever momentum could be claimed for the deficit-reduction plan, Congress still has precious little time to avert a potentially devastating default on U.S. obligations. And there was little dispute that the endgame product contained plenty to offend lawmakers of both parties, and tea party sympathizers as well.
Sen. John McCain conceded as much, saying he'd have to "swallow hard" to vote for it because of cuts in defense spending. But the Arizona Republican said lawmakers had little choice in the face of the specter of default.
Said Crapo: "It is always dangerous to crawl out on a limb and make a prediction about how the vote will go on something as controversial as this. But I believe in the end we will see pretty strong support in the Senate on both sides."
"I am probably a no," freshman Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ohio, a tea party favorite, told Fox News. " ... We need a bold solution and this isn't it."
Another House Republican, Michael Turner of Ohio said he was not ready to endorse the package as he left a closed-door meeting of House GOP lawmakers. Turner is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, and potential cuts to defense spending could be an issue among some Republicans.
The compromise plan agreed to late Sunday would mix a record increase in the government's borrowing cap with the promise of more than $2 trillion in spending cuts.
After a tense weekend of bargaining, President Barack Obama and top congressional figures jointly announced the agreement late Sunday. It provided an instant boost to Asian financial markets and a huge dose of relief to an administration and Congress frazzled by months of partisan warfare and the chance that a default could send the still-fragile economy into recession.
Top Obama aide David Plouffe said Monday the deal was worthy of passage despite the no-holds-barred battle that amounted to a "three-ring circus."
The Senate seems likely to vote first on the measure while House GOP leaders work to assemble support for it. Democratic votes are certain to be needed to pass the measure in the Republican-dominated House, just as Republicans will be needed to clear the measure through the Democratic Senate. Liberal Democrats were already complaining that Obama had given away too much to GOP leaders.
"Now, is this the deal I would have preferred? No," Obama said. "But this compromise does make a serious down payment on the deficit reduction we need, and gives each party a strong incentive to get a balanced plan done before the end of the year."
The legislation would slice more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade and permit the nation's $14.3 trillion borrowing cap to rise by up to $2.4 trillion, enough to keep the government afloat through the 2012 elections ? a key objective for Obama, whose poll numbers have sagged as the summertime crisis dragged on.
House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, telephoned Obama at mid-evening to say the agreement had been struck, then immediately began pitching the deal to his fractious rank and file.
"It isn't the greatest deal in the world, but it shows how much we've changed the terms of the debate in this town," he said on a conference call, according to GOP officials. He added the agreement was "all spending cuts. The White House bid to raise taxes has been shut down."
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was publicly noncommittal. "I look forward to reviewing the legislation with my caucus to see what level of support we can provide," Pelosi said in a written statement. But Democratic officials said she was unlikely to do anything to try to scuttle the package.
Passage seemed likely if not wholly assured. Support from Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., should guarantee Senate approval, but the House could prove more difficult because of defections from left and right alike.
"This deal trades people's livelihoods for the votes of a few unappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it," said Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.
Tea party favorite and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., countered that the deal "spends too much and doesn't cut enough. ... Someone has to say no. I will."
The government presently borrows more than 40 cents of every dollar it spends, and without an infusion of borrowing authority, the government would face an unprecedented default on U.S. loans and obligations ? like $23 billion worth of Social Security pension payments to retirees due Aug. 3.
The increased borrowing authority includes $400 billion that would take effect immediately and $500 billion that Obama could order unless specifically denied by Congress. That $900 billion increase in the debt cap would be matched by savings produced over the coming decade by capping spending on day-to-day agency budgets passed by Congress each year.
A special bipartisan committee would be established to find up to $1.5 trillion in deficit cuts, probably taken from benefit programs like farm subsidies, Medicare and the Medicaid health care program for the poor and disabled. Republicans dismissed the idea that the panel would approve tax increases.
Any agreement by the panel would be voted on by both House and Senate ? and if the panel deadlocked, automatic spending cuts would slash across much of the federal budget. Social Security, Medicaid and food stamps would be exempt from the automatic cuts, but payments to doctors, nursing homes and other Medicare providers could be trimmed, as could subsidies to insurance companies that offer an alternative to government-run Medicare.
Plouffe said in a morning network television interview that the administration wasn't giving up on pushing for new tax revenues down the road.
"The only way to really reduce the deficits significantly in a smart way is to make sure there is smart entitlement reform and closing of loopholes and tax reform," he said.
The pact was sealed during a weekend of talks in which GOP leaders Boehner and McConnell dealt directly with the White House, especially Biden. The final battle was fought over Pentagon spending cuts, with Democrats emerging with a face-saving victory for $350 billion in defense spending curbs.
But Republicans set the parameters of the debate, with Boehner successfully winning spending cuts equaling the amount of the debt increase ? though the cuts phase in over time and future Congresses will have ample temptation to find ways around stringent spending caps called for in the pact.
Obama said such appropriated accounts would be left with the lowest levels of spending as a percentage of the overall economy in more than a half-century.
The measure capped a long saga: first, meetings in a Biden-led group that fell apart over revenues; then, efforts by Obama and Boehner to forge a so-called grand bargain, cutting the deficit by $4 trillion or more over a decade, including new revenues agreed to by Boehner.
In the end, the deal was a split-the-differences compromise, with plenty for both sides to dislike. House GOP defense hawks came out on the losing end. So too did Democratic liberals seeking tax increases.
Plouffe was interviewed on ABC's "Good Morning America," CBS's "The Early Show" and NBC's "Today" show. McCain appeared on CBS.
