Complexions Contemporary Ballet

Complexions Contemporary Ballet

SOCIETY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, OCT. 14

Complexions Contemporary Ballet?s Artistic Directors Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden have strived to re-define dance their entire careers. The two have allowed the transformative power of their art to flow freely throughout the entertainment world ? from E! to PBS to VH1 to FOX TV?s So You Think You Can Dance, for which they?ve choreographed and Richardson appeared as a celebrity guest performer.

Both former principal dancers ? Rhoden with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Richardson with American Ballet Theatre ? founded Complexions in 1994 to remove boundaries in dance, not reinforce them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of the world and all its constituent cultures ? as an interrelated whole. Beyond Useful & Beautiful: Rethinking Domestic Craft

HOUSTON CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT, BEGINNING ?OCT. 1

This fall, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft presents Beyond Useful & Beautiful: Rethinking Domestic Craft, on view in the large gallery through Jan. 8, 2012. The strong connection between craft and the home is critically explored in this exhibition that presents a variety of media ? including furniture, wallpaper, ceramics, quilts, needlepoint, glass and metal ? in a series of domestic vignettes or ?rooms? set up throughout the large gallery.

Beyond Useful & Beautiful is HCCC?s first exhibition in two years that is not based on a particular craft material or group of materials, but explores an overarching conceptual theme ? that of craft?s relationship to the home. Investigating domestic themes is a strong national trend in contemporary craft, and this exhibition attempts to capture this trend with brand-new work from 13 artists. Perspectives 175: Marc Swanson: The Second Story

CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON, THROUGH OCT. 9

Marc Swanson constructs sculptures out of found iconographic sources, from taxidermy to tattoos, fabricating them from culturally-loaded materials so that the resulting sculpture, in both form and content, reveal the conspicuous constructedness of one?s personas in the modern mediated world.

Swanson?s allusions often refer simultaneously to both the austere, rarefied, and serious history of minimal art and the legacy of cheesy metal and self-consciously decadent glam rock bands. In stating the equal importance of both in his work, Swanson makes viewers aware of the complex negotiations between high and low culture in everyone?s lives. This exhibition is curated by Bill Arning, director, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. For more information, visit camh.org.
