Shaw Communications Controlling Family Ups Stake

TORONTO ? The family that controls western Canadian cable giant Shaw Communications has upped its stake.

Calgary?s Shaw family has acquired just over one million non-voting shares to holds around 51.5 million class A voting and class B non-voting shares in the company. Terms of the shares purchased where not disclosed, but the Shaw Family added it will continue to acquire shares on a regular basis.

The move follows Shaw Communications easing the throttle in its drive to rollout a wireless phone service while battling phone giant Telus Corp. in the western Canadian market.

Other setbacks include Brad Shaw recently replacing long-time Shaw Communications CEO Jim Shaw Jr. at the head of the family-controlled media group ahead of schedule. Under Brad Shaw, Shaw Communications has signaled it will focus on its core cable TV, Internet access and satellite TV businesses as it faces stepped up competition from Telus, Netflix Canada and other emerging Canadian players.

'American Idol' Mulls Tweaks to Voting System After Pia Toscano Elimination

American Idol?producers will discuss changes to the voting process at the end of this season, but will not tweak the process this year.

Executive producer Ken Warwick said the producers will consider limiting the number of text votes allowed, incorporating judges' opinions and other ideas for season 11 of Idol.

?

"The texting, the tweeting, the social glue we strive for -- we were aware that voting would be skewed," Warwick said on a conference call Wednesday morning. "Young girls and (mothers) are a driving force (in the voting). So how can we keep it fair? We're not going to start fiddling with the voting now -- but there are many ideas on the table."

?

These conversations are spurred, to some extent, by the early elimination of Pia Toscano, who Warwick said "went at the wrong time." He says he has been supportive of her moving forward in her recording career and making television appearances outside of Idol?such as one scheduled for Dancing With the Stars.

?

"In the old days it was a concern," Warwick said about eliminated contestants making a splash prior to the announcement of the winner. "It's unfair to hold someone back and the field is so diverse this year, the winner will go in a different direction than the power ballads that Pia sings. It doesn't matter to us. She's very marketable. I'm not sure what the plans for Pia are but I'd be looking to get her (recordings) out as soon as possible."

?

What does matter to Warwick is how often a singer brings an instrument onstage. The producers have resisted setting a limit on the number of times singer may use an instrument - Warwick wanted the limit to be two - but says it is now up to the producers' discretion.

?

"This year it isn't an issue. Last year it was an issue," he said. "We don't want anyone hiding behind a guitar (or a piano)." Or in Casey Abrams's case, a string bass.

Pure News scrollable news widget now available

Pure News Widget

Adding to the series of Pure Widgets, Android developer Francois Deslandes has released Pure News to the Android Market after plenty of beta testing. Pure News is a scrollable widget that works in combination with many of the launchers that are available and allows for creation of a customizable, scrollable news widget through Google Reader. If you're also lucky enough to own a Motorola Xoom you'll find that Pure News is supported and all of the customizable options that are made for smaller devices will also run on the Xoom such as skinning, update options and cache operations.

One small caveat of the Pure News widget is that you have to enable scrollable widgets within whatever launcher it is that you are using. You should find those options under the settings area of your launcher of course but once enabled you'll be up and running. Android 3.0 can by pass this step though as 3.0 allows for scrollable widgets.

Sadly, no lite or trial version is available currently but you should certainly be able to see if it fits your needs within the refund time allotted. Jump on past the break for the download and to see it up and running on the Motorola Xoom.

MTV Movie Awards Host Jason Sudeikis: Everything You Need To Know!

'Saturday Night Live' regular and star of 'Horrible Bosses' has bona fide comedic chops.
By Kara Warner

Congrats are in order for "Saturday Night Live" star Jason Sudeikis, who has just been announced as our newest MTV Movie Awards host. Sudeikis will be hosting the consistently star-studded and unpredictable event live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, on June 5. So for those who haven't been following the comedic actor's every move since he began his successful career, here's a few handy Sudeikis facts and figures to help explain why he's the perfect choice to lead our 20th annual Movie Awards.

Before getting his big break on "SNL," Sudeikis performed in several improv troupes in Kansas City, Chicago and Las Vegas. In fact, he was a founding member of Second City Las Vegas, where he was eventually snatched up by "SNL" to be a sketch writer in 2003. He became a full-fledged castmember in 2006 and had memorable turns impersonating the likes of "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks and Vice President Joe Biden.

In recent years, Sudeikis has been carving a name for himself outside of the comforts of his "SNL" family. In addition to a guest appearance on "30 Rock" as ("SNL" alum) Tina Fey's love interest Floyd, Sudeikis has appeared in a slew of feature films: "What Happens in Vegas," "The Bounty Hunter," "Going the Distance," "Hall Pass" and the upcoming flicks "Horrible Bosses" and "A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy." He also currently lends his voice to "The Cleveland Show," as Holt Richter and Terry Kimple. With all these eclectic acting tricks in his bag, Sudeikis is guaranteed to keep the MTV audience entertained come June 5.

"I'm sincerely flattered that the folks from the Mostly Teenage Viewers network have invited me to host this year, and I look forward to keeping the streak of flawless and critically lauded Movie Awards show hosting in 2011 alive," Sudeikis said about the gig.

The MTV Movie Awards nominees — based on your votes at MovieAwards.MTV.com — will be announced on May 3, at which point you'll be able to vote for your favorite films and stars in categories like Best Fight, Best Kiss, Biggest Badass Star, Best Villain and, of course, Best Movie. Voting will continue through June 4, though Best Movie will remain open throughout the live ceremony on June 5 — meaning you'll have a chance to affect the night's biggest prize until the very last minute.

The 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET.

Charlie Sheen Heads Down Under Next Week

SYDNEY -- Charlie Sheen is heading down under next week and will do a breakfast radio show in Sydney with his Aussie cohort, Scott Dooley.

Dooley, a host on Sydney FM station Nova969, and Sheen have struck up a burgeoning friendship, after Dooley interviewed Sheen in the midst of his February media blitz at Sheen?s Sober Valley Lodge.

Dooley and Sheen at the time made the guerrilla short film, Operation Greyhound?together when the pair purportedly stole Sheen?s Two and Half Men trailer from the Warner Bros lot.

During the Easter break, Sheen got Dooley back to the U.S. to be the moderator for several shows on Sheen?s My Violent Torpedo of Truth?tour.

Dooleyon ?Wednesday aired an interview with Sheen that he recorded over Easter, saying he?ll be in Australia on May 7.

"I'm coming to Australia, and we're going to do a radio show together," Sheen said. "Then we'll do a TV show and film that and I'll bring some scripts and do Two and a Half Men and show everybody how it should have been done.?

"It will be the Dools and Sheen epic as always," Sheen said.

A Nova spokesperson confirmed the visit to The Hollywood Reporter, saying Sheen will do the breakfast show in Sydney, with the possibility of it being done as an outside broadcast.

There?s no confirmation yet if Sheen will do any his Torpedo of Truth shows here or details of other planned appearances.

Skydiving and Injury

I have a hard time speaking from experience on this one, as I am only in my first few days of injury to have gone through all the phases of grief that one might expect when it comes to being injured to the point of being grounded during the skydiving season, so I?m just going to shoot from the hip (pun intended) a bit and see how this turns out.

So far my skydiving season has started out a bit on the rough side. Between having the nice weather fall on days I?m hunkered down at the office and this hip/back injury that has me couch surfing for a few weeks, I?ve really only had one solid weekend of skydiving.

That said, I?m struggling a bit. With the type of injury I?m enduring (since, I can really only speak from experience here) I have good days and bad. Some days I wake up feeling amazing and then I?ll push myself and then come 6pm I?m laid up on the couch with this burning, tingling sensation all down my left leg. Other days I wake up with pain, rest a while, take some Advil then I?m good to go around lunch time. Still others, are just plain bad.

(Unfortunately, since the diagnosis, I?ve yet to have a completely good day?)

In a situation like this, the better days are tempting ? especially when the weather is nice. I mean, I?ve had minimal opportunity to jump this season, so why wouldn?t I just risk it on days where I feel better to get in a little freefall?

Luckily, so far, I?ve been strong enough to remind myself that if I stick with PT for a few weeks and stay out of the sky I?ll have a much better chance of continuing my skydiving career for years to come than if I take one risk and one wrong step on landing to put me 4 giant steps back, or worse.

As someone who tries to be practical, that?s the best advice I can give to anyone who might have a minor injury this season, or in seasons to come. Take a deep breath, enjoy the time with your fellow jumpers (or even off the dropzone) on the ground, knowing that recovery is your first priority so that in seasons to come, jumping can be priority 1 again.

Talk to me again in a few weeks to see if my tune has changed?but for now, that?s the best advice I can give myself, or anyone like me.

Love and blue skies!

Ashley

Lil B Says I'm Gay LP Title Provoking Death Threats, Slurs

'One-hundred years later, people gonna thank me, because people are going to be free,' the Based God tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

In his steady rise to rap notoriety, Lil B has relied heavily on his viral fanbase. His multiple MySpace pages, Facebook "likes" and army of Twitter followers have helped propel his music and message. But ever since Lil B announced at Coachella last week that the title of his next album will be I'm Gay, some fans have turned on the Based God. A few have even sent digital death threats.

"People been hitting me up like, 'I'm gonna bash your head in,' 'you f----t,' 'I'm gonna kill you,' " Lil B told MTV News on Thursday (April 21), as he drove to a show at the Mezzanine in San Francisco.

With upcoming shows lined up in Chicago, Detroit and at the Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey in the next few weeks, Lil B showed no signs of fear and said he'd proceed with his scheduled dates.

"I'm not gonna stop and I'm not scared of anybody on earth," he said of the Twitter backlash. "That's why I [titled the album I'm Gay] and nobody gonna stop me."

B insisted he's not a homosexual, but that he is gay, i.e., extremely happy, flipping the word and focusing on its other definition. "I'm very gay, but I love women. I'm not attracted to men in any way. I've never been attracted to a man in my life. But yes I am gay, I'm so happy," he said. "I'm a gay, heterosexual male."

A spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) told XXLMag.com that they hope Lil B's album title is "not a gimmick, and is really a sincere attempt to be an ally."

B stressed to MTV News that he is in fact a supporter. "I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that's why I'm doing it," the Based God said. "I hope GLAAD sees that I'm taking initial steps to break barriers."

When we asked about the makeup of his fanbase, B said hadn't noticed whether there was any significant portion of his following that identifies as gay, but that some have already had a negative reaction to his title selection.

"A lot of my supporters have turned on me. It's been a few supporters that's saying, 'I'm not gonna rock with you anymore,' " the controversial MC revealed. "That's fine, because you know what? They didn't love me for real anyway."

Although the rapper has yet to begin recording the album, he expects to have it ready and available on iTunes in the next month or two. Lil B also believes that even though he's facing resistance now, in the future he'll be hailed as a hero. "One-hundred years later, people gonna thank me, because people are going to be free. And that's the main thing. Even if it's 1 percent of the people that listen to me and are gonna be free, that's better than none," he said. "That's better than not speaking up at all ... and I spoke up and I did it."

What do you think of Lil B's decision to call his album I'm Gay? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

LHC's record intensity speeds Higgs search

LHS experiments are assembled underground. Here, a silicon tracking detector--a cousin to an ordinary digital camera sensor--is inserted into one of the LHC's two general-purpose experiments, the CMS.

(Credit: Michael Hoch/CERN)

The Large Hadron Collider has surpassed a record set by Fermilab's rival particle accelerator for what's called luminosity, a milestone that improves the odds that the gargantuan scientific experiment will produce new physics discoveries.

The LHC operators yesterday packed more bunches of protons into the beam, increasing the likelihood of collisions and therefore of the detection of very rare outcomes from those collisions.

"Beam intensity is key to the success of the LHC, so this is a very important step," said General Rolf Heuer, director of the CERN facility that operates the LHC, in a statement. "Higher intensity means more data, and more data means greater discovery potential."

It also means a better chance that the LHC will be the center of excitement in scientific circles, not the older, less powerful, but still significant Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab in Illinois. Last month, Fermilab reported enough progress in tracking down physicists' favorite unknown fundamental particle, the Higgs boson, to declare the Tevatron the "frontrunner" in the search. The Higgs boson is thought to be instrumental in endowing particles with mass.

The LHC particle accelerator, an underground ring with a 27-kilometer circumference beneath Switzerland and France near Geneva, actually has two beams of protons traveling in opposite directions. The collective energy in each direction is 3.5 tera-electron-volts, or TeV, but because the beams travel in opposite directions, the energy adds up to 7 TeV. That's only half of the LHC's ultimate planned energy level of 14TeV, but it's enough that researchers think they'll be able to find new physical phenomena.

And finding new physics is important for the facility. It postponed a shutdown to upgrade the facility to the higher energy level, betting that there were good odds that the lower level would produce fruitful results. The Higgs boson--or rather a possible collection of them--is just one focus of the facility; the thousands of physicists at the LHC also hope to investigate subjects including the quark-gluon plasma, supersymmetry in among fundamental particles, and dark matter. To perform the research, the LHC accelerates protons (and sometimes lead ions) so they're tremendously energetic, then smashes them into each other to reproduce, for a fleeting moment, a little bit of what the universe was like in its earliest fractions of a second after the Big Bang.

A proton must travel very close to the speed of light to attain energy of 3.5TeV. But even then, it's only got the energy of a flying mosquito. The LHC makes up for this apparent feebleness with numbers, though: It's designed to have enough protons that the total energy in the collider will be that of a 20,000-ton aircraft carrier traveling at 12 knots, according to James Gillies and Mike Lamont, writing on a CERN blog today.

Reaching 3.5TeV is only one challenge. Squeezing more protons into each beam is also crucial, and LHC operators have been gradually increasing that number. Each beam consists not of a continuous stream of protons, but rather a series of bunches with about 100 billion protons each. Yesterday, the LHC got the number of bunches up to 480, which is what led to the record. Ultimately, the LHC is designed to accommodate 2,808 bunches.

Each bunch is only a few centimeters long and--to maximize the odds that protons will actually collide--is compressed to the width of a human hair at the zones in the ring where collisions take place. With 100 billion protons in that volume, it may sound pretty crowded, but it's not. If protons were the size of marbles, a bunch would be as long as the distance from Earth to Uranus and the width as long a the distance from Earth to the Moon. Each marble would be more than 500 miles apart.

Thus, LHC operators want to squeeze more bunches into each beam. They also want to run the beam for as long as possible to collect data from as many collisions as possible. Much of the existing LHC work has alternated between operational priorities to get the machine working properly and research priorities to actually investigate physics, but the LHC is about to embark on months-long run solely devoted to physics.

"There's a great deal of excitement at CERN today and a tangible feeling that we're on the threshold of new discovery," said Sergio Bertolucci, CERN's director for research and scientific computing.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 confirmed, faster-charging integrated battery detailed

Yesterday's speculation has turned into today's fact. The ultraslim Lenovo ThinkPad X1 is most definitely real, coming soon, and just so happens to be packing some fancy new battery technology as well. This intel comes straight from Lenovo's own servers, where a highly informative PDF (intended for reseller partners, but accessible to all) dishes the dirt on the upcoming laptop. The X1's "slice" battery won't be user-replaceable, but what you lose in flexibility will be made up for in sheer performance gains, as Lenovo is touting it'll last three times as long as a normal battery and will recharge 2.5 times faster than previous ThinkPad cells. That's thanks to some fanciness named RapidCharge that will revitalize the X1 to 80 percent within 30 minutes. The presentation slides show the X1 right alongside Lenovo's latest Edge models, the E420s and E220s, as part of "a new generation of ThinkPads," and given that both of those are now shipping, the ultraslim, but still unannounced, X1 can't be far behind. Finally, just for some added intrigue, we've also spotted mention of an "X Slate" within the document -- any ideas as to what that might look like?

[Thanks, Alexandr]

Obama's Foreign Policy: The First Two Years

Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP Photo

President Barack Obama delivered his address on Libya at the National Defense University in Washington on Monday, March 28, 2011.

The Obama administration has said that its foreign policy ideas defy traditional categorization and ideologies.

"Obama has emphasized bureaucratic efficiency over ideology, and approached foreign policy as if it were case law, deciding his response to every threat or crisis on his own merits," Ryan Lizza writes in the May 2 edition of The New Yorker. "[The president recently said on NBC News that] 'when you start applying blanket policies on the complexities of the current world situation, you're going to get yourself in trouble.'"

On today's Fresh Air, Lizza details President Obama's response to the ongoing uprisings in the Middle East and explains why the president's actions ? in Egypt and then in Libya ? say a great deal about the administration's foreign policy strategy.

Lizza also describes what he says are clashing ideologies and divisions that exist within the Obama administration between two camps: the "realists," who view foreign policy in terms of an end game; and the "idealists," who focus on issues like human rights and democracy.

Those two camps recently disagreed, he says, on whether to intervene in Libya. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, described by Lizza as a "consistent realist," opposed any intervention in Libya because he did not think intervening was "in the vital interest of the United States."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, pushed for an intervention, Lizza says, making a powerful case that "even though Libya was not in our vital interest, [the U.S.] had a responsibility to protect the citizens of Benghazi."

With Libya, says Lizza, the Obama administration decided to intervene ? but only after emphasizing the fact that other Arab states, specifically the Arab League, also called for interventions in Libya. In March, the administration quietly took measures to broaden a French and British U.N. proposal asking for a no-fly zone over Libya into permission for full-scale military intervention ? without making it appear like the United States was pulling any strings, Lizza says.

"They were very quiet about [their role]," says Lizza. ... "And there was a lot of criticism from the right [saying], 'Oh. The French. How can we let the French be leading on this?' and I think, to some of Obama's advisers, that's not the worst thing in the world. Their view is that they inherited a United States that was economically weaker and [militarily] dragged down by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ? and that burden-sharing was something that they should look forward to and not something that in some way demeans the United States."

Interview Highlights

On criticism about the phrase "leading from behind," used by an Obama administration official to describe the president's actions in Libya:

"I do think it crystallizes the different ways that Republicans and Democrats view foreign policy. A lot of Republicans believe that worrying about backlash and resentment with how the U.S. acts in the world is overrated and that's not really a problem. The Obama administration takes it very seriously.... [The quote] really gets at something very central to the ways the two parties view foreign policy."

Ryan Lizza is the Washington correspondent for The New Yorker. He was previously a senior editor at The New Republic.

The New Yorker

Ryan Lizza is the Washington correspondent for The New Yorker. He was previously a senior editor at The New Republic.

On the disagreement by Secretary of State Clinton and Secretary of Defense Gates over Libya:

"Gates, as he said publicly, simply believed that Libya was not in the vital interest of the United States and if it's not in the vital interest, then you have the question of, 'Well, we have a humanitarian crisis on our hands ? the crisis being [leader Moammar] Gadhafi's forces were on the outskirts of Benghazi and Gadhafi and his sons were publicly saying that they were going to go house to house to find these rebels. So you had a pretty convincing case that an imminent massacre was going to take place. And if you're Bob Gates, the world is a very ugly place where lots of bad things happen and it's not the United States' job to intervene every time something like that happens even if we can. Clinton comes out of a very different tradition. One of the things that the Bill Clinton White House was known for was its development of a policy of humanitarian intervention, and I think one of the things that both Clintons are tormented by are the cases where they didn't intervene ? specifically Rwanda. This is something in Hillary Clinton's blood and she, as did other people in the Obama administration, make a powerful case that even though Libya was not in our vital interest ? Libya is not Saudi Arabia for instance ? we had a responsibility to protect the citizens of Benghazi essentially."

On traveling with Secretary Clinton to Egypt where members of a youth revolutionary group boycotted her meeting:

"Very early on in the protests, she made a statement that the [Hosni] Mubarak regime is stable. Now objectively, it wasn't an incorrect statement ? the Mubarak regime was stable. But the protesters had this burned into their memories as 'Hillary Clinton supporting the Mubarak regime.'" And that was the reason they cited most often to me for boycotting her meeting. I was meeting with these guys at the same time she was meeting with other members with civil society. So she was upstairs and these guys were downstairs meeting with me and a couple of other reporters. She was really realistic about it. She pointed out that she was involved with protest movements when she was younger. She talked about her work with the Vietnam War and how in every revolution, there are people who take absolutist positions and boycott this or that meeting. She didn't really seem too bothered about it, to be honest. And she very pointedly said, 'Ryan, the people who start revolutions are not necessarily the same people who go on to run the country.' Her takeaway was she was very worried about what was going on in terms of the transition in Cairo because there's no recent history of political engagement, of party building, and the people she met with, she found disorganized and not quite ready for the elections that were coming. And she was very worried about that, particularly because the one group that is organized is the Muslim Brotherhood."

On changes in Obama's foreign policy in the next two years:

"I do think Obama himself has reached a point in his presidency where his early tilt toward a realist foreign policy has reached the limits of its success; in other words, I think there was something that made sense about a very realist foreign policy in the first year or two given the state of the world, given the economic situation of the United States ? that the first two years had to be about rebuilding our economy, rebuilding our reputation, rebuilding our strength in the world. Because no country that is weak can spread its ideals. So if you're an idealist, what you wanted in those first two years was to rebuild all of those things, and I think that required a certain amount of realism. The hinge of the story of his first term will be the uprising in the Middle East that will allow our foreign policy, to allow our interests and our values to align in a region where they have not been aligned for a very long time."

Many Advantages Come With Online Casinos | Elite Article Directory

Online casinos are becoming more popular because they have many benefits. Gambling with a casino through the Internet is an useful idea because an individual can do so from their home. The expense of gas to take a vehicle from someone?s home to the casino is no longer a problem if a gamer decides to gamble via the internet. The hassle of crowds and noisiness that often are distracting while at a casino are gone when using the Web to gamble.

Software needs for a player?s computer should be known so that he or she can gamble without problems or errors on the Internet. With online gambling, there is support readily available for customers with technical problems in case they occur.

It is recommended that an Internet gamer makes sure they are gambling from a reputable casino. Knowing who runs the casino over the web and manages its operations is a good way to determine how safe and trust -worthy the casino is. There are also laws in local areas that a person may need to know before deciding to gamble on a website. These laws can vary from place to place and not adhering to them could be harmful to a player that is taking an illegal action and does not know it.

Different ways to pay a player are available through a computer-based casino. Players may need to learn about the available payment methods as they play games on the casino website so they can be compensated in a way they most prefer.

When gambling over the internet, some players may worry that their chances of winning are lowered but they are not because the only difference between a person that is gambling through a computer connection and inside of the casino is their location. A person that is playing at a virtual casino has just as much of a chance to win as someone that is in the casino.

As the popularity of casinos that are available for the Internet continue to rise, players are now more likely to benefit from available deals. Bonuses can be given for signing up and are a great advantage for players because enrollment is less expensive when players decide to join a casino that is on the computer.

There are not many limits placed on Internet gamblers because they have the option to play a variety of games with online casinos. The excitement that is a part of the casino is still present if gambling on a computer because internet gamblers can have same amount of fun that players do in a casino since they can do the very same things.

Toyota: Production May Be Disrupted Until December

Toyota said Friday its global car production, disrupted by parts shortages from Japan's earthquake and tsunami, won't return to normal until November or December threatening its spot as the world's top-selling automaker.

President Akio Toyoda apologized to customers in a statement for the delays due to the twin disasters that damaged suppliers in northeastern Japan and affected automakers around the world.

"To all the customers who made the decision to buy a vehicle by us, I sincerely apologize for the enormous delay in delivery," Toyoda said in a statement released before a press conference.

Toyota Motor Corp. said the March 11 disasters have already caused a production loss of 260,000 cars. Earlier this week, it resumed car production at all of its plants in Japan for the first time since the quake, but the factories will run at half capacity due to parts shortages.

The setbacks could cause Toyota to lose its top position in the global auto industry.

Last year, Toyota sold 8.42 million vehicles, barely keeping its lead over a resurgent General Motors Co., which sold 8.39 million, thanks to booming sales in China.

Now with Toyota's production problems, GM could overtake the Japanese automaker this year, reclaiming the title of world's largest automaker that it lost in 2008.

The parts crunch, meanwhile, has been felt around the world, from Malaysia to the U.K. to the United States. Nissan Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. have said several North American plants would be closed for some of April, and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has said his company will see disruptions.

Toyota Motor Corp. has extended production cuts at its North American factories into early June, a move that will likely result in widespread model shortages. Its factories in China are also operating at 50 percent capacity.

The company has pledged not to lay off any of its 25,000 workers in North America and says it will use the extra time for training to make improvements at its 13 factories in the region.

In his statement, Toyoda said the automaker had sent workers into the disaster zone to help factories, dealers and suppliers recover, and was confident they would contribute to a "quicker recovery" of production.

Gartner: BI, analytics software spending jumps 13.4 percent

April 20, 2011

By Chris Kanaracus | IDG News Service

Global spending on BI (business intelligence), analytics and performance management applications jumped 13.4 percent in 2010 to $10.5 billion, according to figures released Wednesday by analyst firm Gartner. The results reflect the BI market's continued strength throughout the world's economic downturn, as customers looked to such software to find efficiencies and gain competitive advantage.

Although enterprise software spending dropped 2.5 percent in 2009, during the height of the global recession, BI sales grew "in the low single digits," Gartner analyst Dan Sommer said. While customer demand played a role, aggressive marketing efforts of BI vendors were also influential, according to Gartner.

[ Explore the current trends and solutions in BI with InfoWorld's interactive Business Intelligence iGuide. | Discover what's new in business applications with InfoWorld's Technology: Applications newsletter. ]

BI remains dominated by a handful of major players. SAP, IBM, Oracle and Microsoft alone control 59 percent of the market for BI and performance management software, according to Gartner, while SAS Institute holds the top spot for analytics.

While not able to provide specific percentages, Sommer estimated that "a fairly big portion" of new BI revenue came from existing users adding licenses, versus brand-new projects.

"But overall we did see a shift from 'maintenance' to 'license' and from 'build' to 'buy,'" he added. "In 2009, most vendors found it challenging to sell new licenses, as discretionary spending in IT budgets was frozen. As a result, vendors came up with increasingly creative strategies to squeeze maintenance revenue out of their customers."

Last year, improved economic conditions and some major product releases from IBM, Oracle, and others "drove renewed license selling efforts and released pent-up demand," Sommer said.

BI revenues could only grow further in coming years, as vendors pursue strategies meant to get the software into more users' hands.

This week, Microstrategy followed other companies in announcing a product that enables "self-service" BI, wherein business users can explore and analyze data on their own, without much help from IT staffers.

BI vendors such as SAS are also moving quickly to add support for mobile devices like Apple's iPad and Android tablets.

Forrester Research recently predicted that the rise of tablets will significantly increase the prevalence of mobile BI since their larger screens are more suitable for the types of visualizations and navigation styles that make BI software most useful.

The Basic Facts about LVN Programs in California - The Education ...

In California there are no LPN nursing programs for students to enroll in because the state does not use the LPN ? licensed practical nurse ? definition any longer. Instead they use the LVN ? licensed vocational nurse ? moniker. So if becoming a nurse in a rather short time is on your agenda you should be looking for LVN programs in California I that is the state you wish to study and become licensed in.

What is an LVN?

The duties and study requirements of graduates of LVN programs in California are much the same as those of an LPN elsewhere, the name is just slightly different. LVN nurses who have graduated form LVN programs in California may be asked to perform both administrative and clinical duties under the direction of physician or registered nurse in a number of different health care settings.

Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments and the accurate maintenance of medical records. The Clinical duties assigned to the average graduate of LVN programs in California will include taking and recording vital signs and obtaining and recording medical histories. They also help prepare patients for examination, and administer some medications as directed by a licensed doctor , physicians assistant or nurse practitioner.

Can You Participate in LVN Programs in California Online?

With the trend towards pursuing a post secondary education online continuing to grow some students wonder if they could perhaps complete an LVN program online. There is however a very strong physical hands on aspect to nursing and the training to become a nurse has to be completed in person at a physical campus, even if you have done some of the theoretical work online which some LVN programs in California will allow students to do.

Does an LVN have to Work in a Hospital?

Once a student has successfully graduated from one of the many great LVN programs in California and obtained their license it is of course time to look for a job. Although hospitals are big employers of LVN nurses this setting isms far from the only choice available to an LVN. Many LVNs find work in residential care centers, where their patient interaction skills are put to good use every day. Some nurses prefer this work environment because it allows them to develop long term relationships with patients and have a real say in their day to day care.

Urgent care centers are becoming more common all over the country and there are usually a great number of employment opportunities for graduates of LVN schools in California in such places as well. LVNs can also find work at private doctors offices and public health clinics, in schools, or choose to work for a private health care agency that assigns its nursing staff to different assignments on an as needed basis.

Kirstie Alley Losing Weight

Kirstie Alley Losing Weight

Kirstie Alley's stint on Season 12 of Dancing with the Stars has not only done wonders for her confidence, but it's done a lot of good for her body, as well! The 60-year-old actress, who has publicly battled with her weight, says her pants size continues to shrink with every week she remains on the show.

"I started out in a size 12, then an 8, and then I think next week I'll be in a 6," she said after her performance Monday night (pictured here). "The real size I want to be in is probably a 4 or a 6. That's where I look best."

In addition to Dancing, Kirstie follows her newly created Organic Liaison weight loss program, which she'll debut on QVC Saturday at 11 a.m. EST.

Alley, who once danced on Oprah Winfrey's stage in a bikini after losing 75 lbs., hinted that she might make a return appearance to the talk show maven's studio to show off her body again.

"There aren't that many Oprah shows left, but you never know," she teased. "It's whittling fast, and I'm dancing every day. Who knows?"

The Bipartisan March to Fiscal Madness

Greenwich, Conn.

IT is obvious that the nation?s desperate fiscal condition requires higher taxes on the middle class, not just the richest 2 percent. Likewise, entitlement reform requires means-testing the giant Social Security and Medicare programs, not merely squeezing the far smaller safety net in areas like Medicaid and food stamps.

Unfortunately, in proposing tax increases only for the very rich, President Obama has denied the first of these fiscal truths, while Representative Paul D. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has contradicted the second by putting the entire burden of entitlement reform on the poor. The resulting squabble is not only deepening the fiscal stalemate, but also bringing us dangerously close to class war. ...

Storm Causes Damage, Injuries At St. Louis Airport

Jeff Roberson/AP

A parking garage at St. Louis International Airport was damaged after an apparent tornado ripped through the area Friday.

St. Louis' main airport was closed for business Saturday while crews cleaned up after an apparent tornado tore through a terminal, causing several injuries and sending people scurrying for shelter as plated glass shattered around them.

Friday evening's storm at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport ripped away a large section of the main terminal's roof, forcing the airport to close indefinitely and diverting incoming flights to other cities.

Elsewhere around St. Louis, residents in suburbs were waking to damaged homes, fallen trees and downed power lines ? the remains of a fierce line of storms that moved through central and eastern Missouri.

"We have all hands on deck here," Mayor Francis Slay said at the airport. "This is something we're putting a lot of attention to."

But amid all the damage, there was relief that things could have been worse. Only four people with minor injuries were taken to the hospital from Lambert, while an unspecified number of others were treated at the scene for cuts blamed on flying glass.

"We're fortunate we didn't have larger (numbers) of injuries," said airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge.

The airport's main terminal sustained the most damage. Hamm-Niebruegge said roughly half of that structure's windows were blown out, sending glass and rain into that building. Elsewhere on the property, trees were toppled and power lines downed, further limiting access to the airport even hours after the storm left its destruction.

Passengers from at least two planes were stranded briefly on the Lambert tarmac because of debris but were later taken away by buses. An Air National Guard facility at the airport was reportedly damaged.

Unconfirmed tornadoes were reported in several counties in the St. Louis area, and at one point utility company Ameren Missouri reported more than 47,000 power outages, with another 7,000 reported in Illinois.

In the suburbs of Maryland Heights and New Melle, the storms damaged several dozen homes but there were no immediate reports of major injuries. Some playground equipment in New Melle was left in a twisted heap by the storm that also tore up roofs and ripped off siding.

Brandon Blecher, 16, said he was home watching the storm out his window in Maryland Heights when he spotted the tornado coming toward his house. A gust of wind knocked out his window.

"The giant wooden swing set in my neighbor's yard came into my yard and a shed landed on my deck," he said. "The tornado was right on top of us."

Maryland Heights police were dealing with reports of gas leaks and downed trees that were blocking roadways.

The city's community center was opened as a shelter Friday night for residents affected by the storm.

"We have electricity, and everything's fine," Vaughn said. "We have heat and air. We'll be here as long as we need to be."

Damage, possibly from a tornado, was also reported at several towns near the airport ? Bridgeton, St. Ann, Ferguson and Florissant. Interstate 270 in that area was closed. Trees and power lines were down. A tractor-trailer was sitting on its end.

In downtown St. Louis, Busch Stadium officials hurriedly moved Cardinals fans to a safe area as tornado sirens blared. The game with the Cincinnati Reds was delayed for hours but later resumed.

At Lambert, installation and roofing tile was strewn about the inside and outside of one terminal. Large, plate-glass windows were blown out. A shuttle was teetering precariously from the top level of a parking garage.

Dianna Merrill, 43, a mail carrier from St. Louis, was at Lambert waiting to fly to New York with a friend for vacation. She said her flight had been delayed by weather and she was looking out a window hoping her plane would pull up. But the window suddenly exploded.

"Glass was blowing everywhere. The ceiling was falling. The glass was hitting us in the face. Hail and rain were coming in. The wind was blowing debris all over the place," she said. "It was like being in a horror movie. Grown men were crying. It was horrible."

Merrill said she felt lucky to be alive and that airport workers quickly moved people to stairwells and bathrooms to get them out of harm's way.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch, who was at the airport when the storm was closing in, said he saw gawkers watching the weather outside as the tornado sirens blared. Moments later, they hastily scrambled inside the building and sought shelter in a restroom.

"About the time we came into the building, the doors blew off," he said. "Literally 10 seconds later, it was over. It's amazing to me more people weren't hurt."

Gov. Jay Nixon announced late Friday he had declared a state of emergency, allowing state agencies to assist local jurisdictions with their emergency responses to the storm's aftermath, including the destruction at Lambert.

"The state of Missouri is ready to assist at every stage of this emergency to keep Missouri families safe and help communities recover," Nixon said.
