The definition of success differs from person to person. It can either be very vague or very well-defined. It can either refer to money, relationships, professions, degrees or in some cases, reaching an abstract ideal. Whatever the case may be however, one thing is certain, success does not happen in a vacuum. People, events, economics, politics, biases and even seemingly unrelated events can influence a person?s ability to generate the kind of wealth that he wants to have.
It?s not just about your income, your savings, or even your job. Wealth and power are contingent upon very specific situations. Once these situations pass then the balance of wealth and power can very easily disappear along with them. So in your definition of success, remember that you?re not always in control. A certain level of chance and chaos has to be factored into the equation.
Another thing that you have to remember is that wealth is more than just money. Money is ultimately just a representation of your value, and value changes. In this sense, commodities, stocks, bonds, land, property, insurance, debt and even information may be considered as forms of wealth. As a general rule, as long as you can monetize something then you can consider that as a type of wealth. So in a sense, a book, a website, pictures, works of art, videos on the internet or even old junk can be a source of wealth provided you can monetize them.
Your definition of success must also extend to the type of work you do. The value of your work or your profession can have a tremendous impact on how far your work will take you. Take for instance, YouTube. There are plenty of video streaming sites all over the internet, and yet YouTube is the most popular one of them all. Why is that? Well, it?s because they are popular and because in some ways, people think that they are reliable.
The same thing holds true for certain successful businesses like Ikea. It?s not that they are different from other types of businesses. What sets them apart is the simple fact that they have made a name for themselves and have established themselves with their target customers.
Having said that, it?s not enough to simply invest in what you are doing. You also have to invest in how you do things, and how people perceive your work. People will begin to recognize your definition of success and look to you for inspiration and help.
